Dan Meers Retires as KC Wolf

Dan Meers, the long-time mascot for the Kansas City Chiefs, has decided to retire after 35 years. He was a good luck charm for the organization as his first year was 1989, the same year Marty Schottenheimer turned around the Chiefs’ fortunes with a winning season.

Unlike many mascots who keep their identity a secret, Meers was totally open about his identity as he went around to schools in the area and gave talks to kids. His understudy, Shawn Emerson, long-time area teacher, administrator, and coach, told us once he knew all of Meers’ speeches by heart. The two are best friends.

Meers’ travels took him to North Harrison and Worth County one time, giving talks to kids. He took it in good humor when one Worth County student, Cole Ruby, who was in fifth grade at that time, showed up in a Carolina Panthers jersey. A couple of months later, a return trip to North Harrison by the other K.C. Wolf was not so hospitable as Emerson’s Trojans beat the Shamrocks on the girls side.
