Thomson Splash & Play to Open May 14th

The City of Maryville and Maryville Parks and Recreation are excited to announce that the grand opening of Thomson Splash ‘N’ Play Park has been set for Friday, May 14th at 5 p.m. The grand opening will include a few short words from the Thomson Family, City of  Maryville, Maryville Parks and Recreation, followed by a ceremonial ribbon cutting. All families are invited to begin splashing immediately after the ribbon cutting. The Thomson Splash ‘N’ Play Park will be free for public use from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day until October. Thomson Splash ‘N’ Play Park is located at the southwest corner of Munn Avenue and Highway V and features a zero-depth splash pad with spray features with musical play attractions. A restroom facility, shade structures, benches and landscaping will be added to the park in the future.

Thomson Splash ‘N’ Play Park was made possible through the generous donation of Dick and Kay Thomson and vision of the Thomson family. The splash park is intended as a ‘thank you’ to the community from Dick and Kay for all the blessings Maryville has provided them. Dick and Kay Thomson, along with their son Doug, came to Maryville in 1966. Upon moving to the community, Kay began teaching at Eugene Filed Elementary School until their second child Jennifer was born. She later returned to the school until retirement. Dick joined what would become the Beavers, Thomson & Beavers law firm. He later joined Nodaway Valley Bank and retired as President in 2004. Dick and Kay recently celebrated their 81st birthdays and 58th wedding anniversary. Their children, Jennifer (Dave) Strueby of Maryville, and Judge Doug (Annie) Thomson of Parkville, as well as their grandchildren, were raised in Maryville and attended school here. Dick and Kay now reside at Tallgrass Senior Living Center in Overland Park, KS.
