Internet Speed to Expand Exponentially in Worth County

Internet speed will expand exponentially in Worth County. In an email to customers Tuesday, May 4th, GRM reported that construction had begun on fiber to the premise construction for three of its exchanges, including the Blockton exchange. This includes Sheridan customers. Once fiber is placed and successfully tested, GRM will contact customers and ask them to select the package which best fits their lifestyle.

Roberta Owens reported at the Worth County Progress Organization Meeting Tuesday, May 4th that United Fiber is about to begin construction of high speed Internet that will be 15 times current speeds. They are currently in the process of doing Darlington, and when they are done, they will do Grant City and Allendale.

The work is paid for by the recently passed American Rescue Plan. Service providers have three years to spend federal funding for the projects; if a project is not completed, then other providers can hook up customers. A third provider has gotten federal funding to bring high speed Internet to the Worth County area, but has not revealed their plans.

Grant City continues to own its own high speed Internet service provided by Midwest Data, based in Rock Port. There are different options available at City Hall.

Starlink is offering high speed service for rural areas; however, we checked its availability for Sheridan, and the cost is high. It is $499 to set up the equipment and $99 per month, and it will not be available until later in the year. It is being offered on a limited first come, first served basis.
