A crook tried to buy the Grant City Bakery in 1931, then cut and run after writing a bad check for the firm. During the week of October 7th, 1931, Ed Trusty came to Mark Dalrymple,, who had owned the Grant City Bakery and who wanted some time off due to his health. Mr. Trusty then drew a check on a bank in Eldora (IA) and got possession of the business.
Subsequently, Mr. Trusty visited the other businesses around the Grant City Square, bought some merchandise, wrote some more bad checks, and established credit with various wholesale firms. Subsequently, Mr. Trusty told everybody that he would go to Milan to bring his wife and that he would be back Monday.
Mr. Dalrymple became suspicious when Monday came and there was no baker. He contacted the Eldora bank and found out there were no funds. The sheriff was notified, a warrant sworn out, and control of the Grant City Bakery reverted back to Mr. Dalrymple.
The wife was not in Milan, but in Richmond, where Mr. Trusty had left that town in possession of his wife’s clothes; the authorities there were hunting him as well.
