Alex Young, Kylan Hale, and Mason Preston all went deep to keep Gilman City in the game in the early going and Mason Preston pitched his best game yet as a freshman as Gilman City recovered from a forgettable 13-3 loss to Brookfield with a 13-6 win over Trenton Friday. The game, despite a subsequent 6-5 loss to Plattsburg, brought the magic number for a winning season for the Hawks to one game.
It looked like more of the same at first. Avery Gregg caught the first out of the Trenton first in center field, but Camden Griffith got off to a rocky start for the second game in a row. Elijah Miller singled and Camden Skipper singled, putting Miller at third. Matthew Bowden reached on an error as Skipper took third and Miller scored to make it 1-0. Caleb Dixon walked to load the bases. Camden Skipper stole home to make it 2-0.
But Gilman City got right back in the game as Mason Preston homered and then Alex Young homered to tie it at 2-2.
Graeme Sager and Elijah Miller singled with one out in the second for Trenton. Camden Skipper struck out, but Sager and Miller pulled off a successful double steal and Matthew Bowden beat out an infield hit to score Sager to make it 3-2 and put Miller on third. Caleb Dixon singled to left to score Miller to make it 4-2 before Dustin Ward caught Jacob White’s pop fly to get the Hawks out of the inning.
Dustin Ward walked to start the Hawk second and Kylan Hale followed with a home run to tie it right back up at 4-4.
Cayden Farmer was plunked to start the Bulldog third. Dru Vandevender reached on an error to put runners on first and second. They took second and third on a passed ball. Ayden Ortega struck out and the ball got away. Gilman City threw to first to complete the strikeout, but Cayden Farmer scored on the play to put Trenton back in front 5-4. But Mason Preston came in to strike out the next two batters to get the Hawks out of the inning.
Mason Preston and Camden Griffith walked to start the Hawk third. Alex Young grounded out to short for the first out, but Mason Preston scored all the way from second while Camden Griffith went first to third to tie the game up at 5-5 again. Jace Estrada singled to right as Griffith scored to put the Hawks in front 6-5. Dustin Ward walked. Kylan Hale reached on catcher’s interference to load the bases.
Carter Robertson walked to force in a run to put the Hawks up 7-5. Dakota Meringa walked on four pitches to force in Dustin Ward to make it 8-5. Parker Holcomb was plunked to force in Nicholas Grover (running for Hale) to make it 9-5. Mason Preston singled to left to score Carter Robertson to make it 10-5. Camden Griffith singled to score Dakota Meringa to make it 11-5. Alex Young was hit by a pitch to force in Parker Holcomb to make it 12-5.
Trenton got one run back in the fourth when Camden Skipper singled. He stole second and took third on a wild pitch. Caleb Dixon grounded out to score him to make it 12-6.
Dakota Meringa walked to start the Hawk fifth. Parker Holcomb grounded out to first to advance Meringa to second. Camden Griffith singled to score him to make it 13-6.
With one out in the Trenton sixth, Elijah Miller was plunked. Camden Skipper grounded into a double play, with shortstop Camden Griffith stepping on the bag and throwing to Jace Estrada for the twin killing.
Hawk center fielder Avery Gregg and third baseman Parker Holcomb made catches in the field for the first two outs of the Trenton seventh, but Jacob White walked to keep the game going. Cayden Farmer reached on a dropped fly ball as White went first to third. But catcher Alex Young threw Farmer out stealing second to end the game.
