Six Trees to Come Down in Sheridan Park

The Sheridan City Council Monday voted to pay a contractor $5,600 to cut down six trees in the Sheridan Park and cut the dead branches off of two others this fall. The trees are aging and getting hollow, and the city says they present a safety hazard. The price includes stump removal.

The city voted to shut off one customer for nonpayment of a water bill. All water bills over $100 or two months old must be paid or water will be shut off. Water service will not be restored until the bill is paid in full plus a $25 reconnect fee. These are rules that cannot be changed by the city; they are rules the city agreed to when they accepted the recent USDA water loan/grant to overhaul the water system.

The city received a complaint about dogs. All dogs within the City of Sheridan must be tied up, kept inside, or fenced in. People can own no more than three dogs. People can shoot dogs which are attacking them or their animals.

Missouri law specifically states that a person may lawfully kill a dog caught in the act of killing, wounding, or chasing sheep or other domestic animals. The threat must be immediate and direct, not speculative.

It also provides an absolute defense against criminal or civil liability if the person reasonably believed the dog posed an imminent threat of harm to themselves or another person. If a dog has trespassed at least twice on your property and you’ve made formal complaints, especially if one involved safety concerns or livestock/property damage, then a subsequent trespass is considered prima facie evidence of imminent harm.
