The Worth County Commission Monday voted to sign up for the Code Red Emergency System at a cost of $1,500 per year. It would alert all phones in the event of an emergency, not just ones that are signed up with Textcaster. The county took that step after a presentation from Emergency Management Director Abby Hawk.
Currently, the county alerts residents of emergencies through Textcaster and through emergency warning sirens that are in every town. But there are people who do not get Textcaster and/or cannot hear the sirens. It can be set up to call landline phones as well.
Following the recent flood in Texas that claimed over 100 lives, there had been discussion between Hawk and commissioners about how better to improve the county’s systems. Hawk would control the alert system, and there would be people to back it up if she is out of town and an emergency happens.
