Proposals to carve up Kansas City and give the Republicans a 7-1 majority in congress could accomplish that goal. Or they could backfire by making Sam Graves’ and several other districts more competitive and force them to spend more resources defending their seats.
President Donald Trump is pushing for Missouri and Texas to redistrict congressional seats in a way more favorable to Republicans this year, in the belief that California and New Jersey are planning to make their districts more favorable to Democrats. Typically, Missouri, like other states, redistricts every ten years following the census.
In 2022, State Senator Bill Eigel proposed such an approach. According to his figures, Democrats would keep the 1st District, which went 61% Biden. All the other districts would go for Trump. The 5th district would be divided, with Clay County joining the 6th District, Jackson County joining Jefferson City, and Independence joining Columbia.
However, the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th districts would all be more competitive than in years past according to Sen. Eigel’s figures. In particular, the proposed new boundaries of the 6th district would go +17 for Trump, which is much more competitive than past races. Since 2008, the last time the 6th district had a competitive race, Rep. Sam Graves has regularly carried the current 6th District with 70% of the vote.
