Bedford Gashes Tiger Defense, Posts 64-56 Win

Worth County had every reason to expect a win over Bedford, which came into Friday’s game winless in two tries. But Bedford gashed Worth County both through the air and on the ground at will, and the Tigers could not buy a stop as they fell 64-56. The offense was solid and played well enough to win most games. But the defense is a major rebuilding project.

Bedford took the opening drive and drove down the field in 10 plays. They rode the back of Eli Morris on the ground and isolated Brennan Sefrit twice for long passes from Cooper Nally, getting a 29 yard strike to go up 6-0 with 7:50 left. In last year’s 70-12 Worth County win, Sefrit did not play, and having him on the field made a big difference for the Bulldogs.

Worth County answered, as Andrew Alarcon took an option pitch down the right side and reversed his field to the left, getting down to the four. Andrew burst through a big hole down the left side of center Auston Pride to score to make it 6-6.

A 22 yard option run from Morris put Bedford on their own 37, and they marched to the Tiger 20. A botched screen play and a sack from Austin Welch made it third and 14, but then nobody was home for a pitchout to Morris, who took it to the house from 24 yards with 4:39 left to make it 14-6 Bedford.

Worth County answered right back and tied it up as Austin Welch broke four different tackles on a busted play and took it 33 yards to the house with 3:27 left. Aydan Gladstone optioned it into the end zone to tie it at 14-14. That play was set up by a 20 yard play action from Aydan Gladstone to Reed McIntyre.

But then all hell broke loose as Cooper Nally aired it out to Brennan Sefrit for 28 yards and a score and Morris ran in the extra points to make it 22-14. Bedford then recovered a muffed kickoff and then nobody covered Talon Riedel on a reverse pass from Sefrit on a play that looked like an option that covered 28 yards from the Tiger 33 to the Tiger 5. A holding penalty that wiped out a Nally touchdown run put Bedford back on the 16, but they only needed two plays to make up the distance as Nally converted an eight yard run with 11:55 left in the second to make it 30-14 after Morris’ option run.

The free possession gave Bedford all the momentum it needed to take control of the game, although Worth County was able to hang around until the end. But they could not buy a stop on defense when they needed one.

Andrew Alarcon wove and stiffarmed his way to the 36, and Worth County was in good field position. A few plays later, Andrew Alarcon took an option pitch and ran like the blue shirts weren’t even there as he took it 34 yards to the house, and Alex Rinehart added the extra points to make it 30-22.

Worth County got a rare stop on defense as Bedford lined up in punt formation with Sefrit as kicker on fourth and seven at the Tiger 39. But his pass was picked off by Aydan Gladstone and returned to the Bedford 35. Reed McIntyre rescued a third and five with a ten yard catch to the 20 after bobbling it, and Andrew Alarcon’s six yard screen pass gave Worth County a chance to tie, down 30-28 with 4:40 left. But Alarcon was stopped short of the goal line, and Bedford remained ahead.

The Tigers had every chance to get a stop and a chance to take the lead before half, but on third and five at the Tiger 39, Morris took an option pitch, and nobody was home as he took it 20 yards to the 19. That set up Cooper Nally’s nine yard score with 3:06 left to give Bedford a 38-28 lead.
Bedford nearly tacked on another score as they got an onsides kick, but Andrew Alarcon got a pick, his second in two games, to kill the threat.

Andrew Alarcon’s option pitch took it 36 yards to the Bedford 8 to start the second half, but then on the next play, someone got a helmet on the football, which popped in the air, and Tanner Snethen returned it all the way to the 29. Nally and Morris carried the ball downfield for Bedford, and Worth County nearly held on defense, with Bedford facing fourth and goal at the four. But then Cooper Nally isolated Sefrit, who somehow caught a pass despite being tightly guarded by Andrew Alarcon and stayed inbounds to make it 44-28 with 5:24 left.

Worth County kept pace as Andrew Alarcon’s 30 yard catch and run to the Bedford 23 set up Alex Rinehart’s 19 yard run with 4:40 left to make it 44-34. Rinehart was stopped short of the goal line as Bedford kept it at two possessions.

Once again, nobody recognized the reverse pass as Sefrit took a reverse and aired it out; nobody was anywhere near Talon Riedel, who caught a 40 yard strike to make it 50-34 with 3:39 left in the third.
Worth County came right back as Alex Rinehart bounced outside for 21 yards, Jaxon Anderson somehow came up with a play action pass for 10 despite the much taller Cooper Nally draped all over him, and Aydan Gladstone got a block on a keeper from Justin Dye and took it to the house from 14 yards out with 2:21 left. Aydan Gladstone was stopped short on the extra point try to keep it at 50-40.
The ensuing kickoff died on the 20, but Worth County overran Morris, who scooped it up and ran it back 60 yards to make it 56-40 with 2:10 left in the third.

Alex Rinehart’s 14 yard screen pass rescued a third and seven at the 34, and a few plays later, Aydan Gladstone faked the option and turned it upfield for a 23 yard score with 11:52 left to make it 56-48 after Alex Rinehart took an option pitch for the extra points.

But then Worth County couldn’t buy a stop as they had Bedford backed up third and 12 at the Tiger 39. But then Bedford faked the option and Cooper Nally turned it upfield for a score with 10:42 left. Morris converted a jet sweep for the extra points to make it 64-48.

Worth County got the points right back as Andrew Alarcon’s option went 41 yards to the house with 9:15 left and Alex Rinehart barely made it into the end zone to make it one possession again at 64-56.

But then Bedford took huge chunks of time off the clock on their next drive, milking the clock all the way down to 4:16 before Reed McIntyre finally tackled Cooper Nally three yards short of the end zone on fourth and goal at the five. Worth County finally had a chance to tie, but could get nowhere as Andrew Alarcon’s fourth and two run was inches short at the 13 with 2:32 left. Bedford was able to get a first down and kneel out the clock to end the game.
