More Bull Reece Stories, As Told by Jim Combs

The following were Bull Reece stories, as told by Jim Combs at the Denver Reunion Sunday:
The Bull was known for The Stare, and once, he pranked the junior high football team. He heard them talking boisterously in the locker room one time, and he turned to some folks and said, “Watch this.” He walked in and fixed his stare on them, and all of a sudden, it got deathly quiet.

One time, Bull felt like one of his track athletes was not hustling around the track. So he pulled off his belt and cracked it like a whip, producing the desired result.

Combs recalled that when Bull Reece was really mad, his voice would get unnaturally high. “We wanted to laugh, but we knew not to,” he said.

One time, The Bull was subbing for Mary Ellen Kimble for Library class. Two boys sitting in the back of class were talking too loud, so he stormed back, jerked them up by their shirts, knocked them against each other, and sat them back down. The rest of the class got the hint. The Bull was also known to grab football players by the facemask and lift them off the ground when they weren’t doing what he wanted them to.

Bull Reece was known for his trick plays, but frequently, the referees wouldn’t let him run them. He would create unbalanced lines where six people were on the right side of the ball. They would always work, but the referees would always call them back, infuriating The Bull. Apparently, the referees decided they could rule on anything that was not specifically covered in the rulebook and could thus disallow such plays.
