Tiger Softball Beats Maryville for First Time Ever; Spiers Drives In 6

We thought it was a misprint when we first saw the score – Worth County had beaten Maryville 12-3, getting their first-ever win against the Spoofhounds. Every other game Worth County had played against Maryville was one-sided in the Spoofhounds’ favor, most either of the ten-run or fifteen-run variety. Maryville had shown promise in their first game, playing Lathrop tough before falling.

It looked like more of the same last Monday against Maryville, as the Spoofhounds batted first. Regular pitcher Ali Brown was out (flu) and Braidy Hunt walked two batters and the Hounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead.

But then Worth County fought back as Merrideth Spiers hit a towering drive that cleared the left field fence, her second home run in three games, to tie it right back up at 3-3. All of a sudden, Worth County realized they could play ball with Maryville and Hunt settled down and gave up no more runs.

Meanwhile, Worth County broke the tie in the third to go up 5-3, and added three in the fifth and four in the sixth to break open the game.

The two seniors, Anna Gladstone and Merrideth Spiers, put on a clinic, with Spiers driving in six runs and going 4 for 4. Anna also went 4 for 4 with a double. Megan Cassavaugh was 2 for 2 and walked and was hit by a pitch. Hailey Adwell was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI, while Jill Hardy was 2 for 4 with a double.

The Junior Varsity also beat Maryville, winning 6-4.
