North Harrison’s junior high girls finished off a season which exceeded all expectations as they posted their tenth win and won a thriller, 27-25 over Albany for the second place slot in their home round robin. Their lone loss in the tournament was to Princeton, as nobody could guard their point guard, Lauren Krohn, or figure out how to score in the paint against skyscraper Breann St. Onge.
The Shamrocks were shorthanded against Albany as they missed Rainey Fordyce (illness) and had to battle for everything they got. But they pulled through in the end, although not without adventures. They got their ten wins despite only having two players who had played basketball previously. However, they kept getting better over the course of the season to get their winning record.
Nobody could take control in the first half and nobody led by more than two. The game was tied at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 before Albany led 13-12 at the half. Jayliegh Robins was able to find some driving lanes open in the frame and had six in the half. Deva Wallace added a steal after a tip from Robins, while Bally Briggs had two free throws. North Harrison could not stop Ivy Houts, who had seven in the half.
The game was just as tight as the Worth County boys game against Jefferson in the Albany Tournament, as nobody could get the lead to more than one possession for a long time. But finally, North Harrison got a scoring burst in the last part of the third quarter as Wallace scored off a drive, Camden Castleberry hit Robins for a drive, Trendi Johnson inbounded one to Robins for a layup on the weak side, and Camden Castleberry hit Deva Wallace for a right wing triple as time was winding down to put North Harrison up 24-17 after three.
But Albany kept handing around as Ashley Sterkis banked one home and Ivy Houts cleaned up after a steal to make it 24-21. They crept even closer after Houts drained one from the right side to make it 25-23.
Camden Castleberry hit a free throw, Albany threw one away, and North Harrison had a chance to take control, but Jayliegh Robins missed a 1-1. Albany missed two chances to bring it within one, but got the ball back with an over and back call after pressure from Houts. Robins got a steal, but North Harrison missed a 1-1 and two close looks at the basket before Claire Manring went coast to coast against North Harrison pressure to make it 26-25.
Camden Castleberry hit a free throw with 24.5 seconds led to make it 27-25, and Ivy Houts drove into the lane in an attempt to tie. But Bally Briggs was there for the rejection.
The final action was frantic after Briggs missed two free throws and a tieup went back to Albany. Katelyn Briggs got a steal, but then Ivy Houts stole it from Bally Briggs and got fouled with 2.2 seconds. She missed both, Albany got the ball back, and Ivy got her own rebound and missed an off-balance 3-pointer as time expired.
Jayliegh Robins led the scoring for North Harrison with 12. Deva Wallace had 7, Camden Castleberry 4, and Bally Briggs and Trendi Johnson 2 each.
