Northeast Nodaway’s girls matched their win total from last year the night after their bubble burst as they held off North Nodaway’s attempts to rally and won 42-28 Friday night. The Bluejays continued their momentum from winning the PVI as they won a conference matchup 43-31 Tuesday over Nodaway-Holt. The Trojans jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead, but Northeast regained their footing and recovered for the victory behind a strong second half performance from Makayla Adwell. Madelynn Mattson had 17 points and Adwell 14 as NEN showed that Mattson’s showing in the tournament was no accident.
The bubble finally burst for Northeast against Stanberry as Madi Sager ate them alive on their home court, all hell broke loose, and it turned into a layup drill for Stanberry, who established themselves as a favorite to go to state this year unless someone else shows otherwise. Gerry Runde was a rare bright spot in the 57-25 loss, getting 15 points for NEN.
Northeast had to play back to back nights as North Nodaway was coming to down. This time, they got off to a fast start, held off North Nodaway’s attempt to rally, and got the 42-28 win. Statistically, the teams mirrored each other – North Nodaway had two more rebounds, 36-34. NEN had 37 tips, but North Nodaway was right behind at 35. Both teams had 12 steals. But NEN did a much better job of working the ball around to the open person; they had 17 assists to 10 for North Nodaway.
It looked like NEN would have just as easy of a time with North Nodaway at first as Stanberry did with them the night before. North Nodaway had every right to expect a good game, as they posted an impressive win on the road in DeKalb and they were rested, while Northeast had played a brutal game the night before. But it was NEN coming out of the gates quickly, pounding the ball at will into Madelynn Mattson. Blair Stoll found her open inside twice, and then hit one from the high post off a pass from Gerry Runde to make it 6-0. Ashley Thompson scored inside off a pass from Audrey Trimble and Kandace Damgar skipped one to Keagan O’Riley to cut it to 8-4.
But then Makayla Adwell hit Gerry Runde on the baseline for a triple and Taylor Coffelt skipped one to her for a 13-4 lead. North Nodaway looked to be in serious trouble when Ashley Thompson got her second foul; meanwhile, Madelynn Mattson hit Cassy Redden at the top of the key to make it 15-4 and then Paige West hit Gerry Runde on the right side and Gerry Runde hit Madelynn Mattson inside to make it 20-4 early in the second.
Three factors stopped the bleeding for North Nodaway, which had a heck of a time getting any kind of offense going in the first quarter. NEN had 12 tips in the period as Paige West (14 tips) and Makayla Adwell (11 tips) were getting in the passing lanes at will. But the Mustangs finally found daylight in the second as Keagan O’Riley hit Kandace Damgar for a 3-pointer and Audrey Trimble hit Alisha Davison on the wing to make it 20-9. The second was that Madelynn Mattson picked up fouls on back to back plays and had to sit down with three. The third was the rebounding of Audrey Trimble, who started flying to the ball as well as she ever has as a Mustang.
A rare 3-pointer from Makayla Adwell made it 23-9, but North Nodaway started chipping away again, getting to within 11 at on an Emma Hart free throw to make it 25-14.
NEN looked like it was in trouble to start the third as Mattson picked up her fourth foul and Gerry Runde her third as Ashley Thompson, who had her best game of the year (13 points, 11 boards), started getting loose inside and Alisha Davison added a shot from the right wing. North Nodaway got to within 5 when Kristin Herndon hit a guarded 3-pointer off a pass from Davison, 29-24, before Paige West hit a cutting Runde, who stayed on the floor despite her three fouls, to make it 31-24 after three.
Ashley Thompson hit a free throw to make it 31-25 with 7:09 left, Runde picked up her fourth with 6:41 left, and it looked like she would pick up her fifth 40 seconds later as everyone started walking to the North Nodaway end. But the call was on Kristin Herndon instead, which seemed to suck all the momentum away from North Nodaway. Runde managed to stay on the floor another five minutes and didn’t foul out until the game was already decided.
Given new life, Runde cut inside and got a pass from Makayla Adwell for a layup, drawing Ashley Thompson’s fourth foul and opening up some lanes. Gerry Runde hit Taylor Coffelt cutting inside, then; Makayla made a diving save of an offensive board and rolled it to Runde, who hit her third 3-pointer of the night to make it 38-25. Then, Madelynn Mattson hit a free throw with 3:06 left to make it 39-25.
There were some more anxious moments as Mattson fouled out and Runde followed her to the bench shortly afterwards as Ashley Thompson hit some free throws to close her team to within 39-28 with 1:32 left. But after NEN missed a 1-1, Taylor Coffelt kept a possession alive with an offensive board and hit two free throws for a dagger with 1:23 left. It wasn’t the only time she had broken North Nodaway’s hearts as she knocked down a buzzer-beating 3-pointer two years ago to swing a tight game in NEN’s favor and erupted for a big night in another game that year. NEN got a stop and managed to run down the clock all the way to 38 seconds before North Nodaway could foul and Adwell hit a free throw for the final score.
