North Nodaway’s girls picked up what turned out to be the only win for either squad Tuesday at the Mound City Tournament as they held off Rock Port 32-30 and overcame horrific free throw shooting.
The Mustangs trailed 17-15 at the half against a team that they have had trouble beating in recent years, but outscored them 12-2 to build up a 27-19 third quarter lead. They were outscored 11-5 in the fourth, but hung on to win.
Ashley Thompson and Audrey Trimble had 8 points each for the Mustangs. Kandace Damgar had 6, Kristin Herndon and Alisha Davison had 4, and Keagan O’Riley had 2. The Mustangs won despite shooting 4 for 17 from the line.
The boys lost 45-31 in the second game of pool play to East Atchison after falling to Mound City in the first night. They led 15-13 at halftime and still had a chance after three, down 25-23. But all hell broke loose in the fourth as they gave up 20 points in the Wolves in the fourth. Arron Coleman led the scoring with 12. Tyler Bix had the lone 3-pointer. The Mustangs were 12 for 21 from the free throw line, an improvement from the North Harrison game, when they were 9 for 24.
