Bryant McCord was a force on defense in football for Worth County’s State Championship team, shutting down the other team’s best receiver. Now, he’s turning himself into a defensive force on the basketball court. In Thursday’s JV win over North Nodaway, he blocked six Mustang shots and altered some others, elevating into the air to do so. He stuffed the stat line elsewhere as well; he had 10 points, 9 boards, 2 assists, 7 tips, and 6 steals as the Tigers won 50-34.
Ethan Thomas hit Tevin Cameron for a 3-pointer on the left wing and Jaxon Anderson scored off a steal after Ethan Thomas tipped one to make it 5-0 just over one minute into the game. Worth County led from wire to wire, although North Nodaway made some runs that kept them close for a while.
Ryan Riley scored off a tip and Lucas Alvarez scored off a drive and had a 3-pointer where he faked a defender out and faded into the corner to knock it down. “Lucas never played organized ball before this year,” said Coach Jake Shipman. “He’s a quick study and he’s picked up the game really well.”
Worth County countered with a Tevin Cameron layup off a steal, a Cameron pullup, a Bryant McCord backdoor layup after a pass from Anderson, and a McCord pullup to lead 13-7 after one.
Jacob New scored off an Ethan Thomas steal, one of six for Thomas. But North Nodaway began chipping away as Ryan Riley scored off a drive and Wyatt O’Riley got a putback to make it 15-11. North Nodaway hung around the rest of the half as Austin Bird’s drive with 10 seconds left kept it at 21-17.
Jaxon Anderson tried to take over the game for Worth County as he scored off a drive and then Bryant McCord aired one out to him to make it 25-17. But then North Nodaway got back in it from behind the arc as Karson Oberhauser hit a 3-pointer from behind the wing. Anderson scored off another drive, but Ryan Riley hit a 3-pointer off a Lucas Alvarez drive and Riley went down the baseline to cut it to 27-25.
That was when Tevin Cameron got the hot hand for Worth County. He pushed it right back down the floor after Riley’s basket and scored, then jumped a pass for a layup and added a 3-pointer after grabbing an offensive board. Jacob New aired one out to Jaxon Anderson before Logan Keho scooped and scored a carom to make it 36-27 after three.
Worth County put it away in the fourth as Bryant McCord converted an offensive board into a putback, Jacob New aired one out to Jaxon Anderson, and Caleb Parman scored off a drive. McCord got six of his nine boards in the fourth.
