Northeast Nodaway’s boys completed a three game week by running the table and raising their record to 6-1. They started off by beating Nodaway-Holt and Stanberry, then finished it by doubling up North Nodaway 64-32 Friday.
North Nodaway looked like they were finally on the upswing following their win over DeKalb. They had hopes of building on that and disrupting NEN’s momentum. “Proffitt’s got a good program, and we’ve got to play our best game in order to stay with them,” said Coach Jake Shipman before the game. The two coaches are best friends, but always want to beat each other and are more wound up than usual when they coach against each other. But any hopes by Shipman that NEN would be spent by their 49-45 win over Stanberry the night before were dashed early.
Tips and steals were even for Friday’s game, but Northeast outrebounded North Nodaway 32-25. But it was who got the boards that mattered – Spencer Weir led the team with 10 for Northeast. That meant a lot of transition opportunities, a lot of assists (NEN had 17 assists to 6 for North Nodaway), and a lot of easy baskets. In addition, North Nodaway didn’t have an answer for Eli Scroggie, who scored 8 of his 10 points in the first quarter. Scroggie battled foul trouble the rest of the way, but by that time, it didn’t matter; NEN was too far ahead and everyone else was opened up.
Dylan Mildfeldt started getting to the rim early as well; all of NEN’s first 11 points were a result of either Mildfeldt pushing it up the floor, driving to the rim, or getting the ball to someone open as the Bluejays led 11-5 just three minutes into the game. Chet Spire got one inside to Eli Scroggie, Spencer Weir went coast to coast for a free throw after a quick shot from North Nodaway, Eli Scroggie got a tip to keep a possession alive to Cameron Staples, Spencer Weir got a defensive board and a quick outlet to Dylan Mildfeldt, who threw it back to Weir, and Cameron Staples got one into Eli Scroggie inside to make it 20-5 with 2:44 left.
Arron Coleman finally broke the run by taking a charge on defense, and North Nodaway finally started to get going. Cody Wood hit a 3-pointer as he slipped behind a screen and knocked one down from the baseline. Spencer Weir countered with an and-one three point play, but free throws from Cole Bird, Cody Wood, and Arron Coleman closed North Nodaway to within 23-12, as they threatened to follow the lead of the girls and get right back in it.
As one of the NEN players admitted, their legs were nearly spent from the Stanberry game, but every time North Nodaway would get a run going, they would find their second, third, and fourth wind and keep going. It didn’t help North Nodaway in the second quarter that Cole Bird, their leading scorer for Friday’s game and one of their top rebounders, picked up his third foul early in the second, forcing him to the bench.
North Nodaway had a chance to get under double digits, but NEN got a stop and Spencer Weir went coast to coast the other way and converted a 3-point play to spark a run that would last the rest of the half. Dylan Mildfeldt scored off a drive and a triple off a Weir kickout. Cody Wood scored off a drive to make it 31-14, but Dylan Mildfeldt scored a pullup, Spencer Weir scored on a fast break after Chet Spire aired one out, and Dylan Mildfeldt hit Brayden Welch inside to make it 38-16.
Logan Keho hit a free throw for North Nodaway, but then Spencer Weir hit a 3-pointer off a pass from Reed McIntyre, Mitchell Sherry hit a free throw, then got a putback at the buzzer despite being leveled and landing hard on his side, hitting the free throw to put NEN up 45-17.
Cole Bird returned for North Nodaway, Eli Scroggie picked up his fourth foul, and once again, the legs of NEN’s players were nearly spent to start the third. Bird hit from the baseline, added a putback, and scored an off-balance shot after Arron Coleman got him the ball. Arron Coleman added a drive and a triple off a pass from Austin Bird with 3:30 left in the third to make it 49-28, Proffitt was starting to get agitated, and North Nodaway was threatening to make a game of it.
But once again, North Nodaway couldn’t keep Spencer Weir off the boards and once again, he pushed it down the floor and found Dylan Mildfeldt open as North Nodaway would go scoreless until midway through the fourth. Spencer Weir scored off a Brayden Welch steal, Welch cut inside for a Cameron Staples pass, and Welch hit Mitchell Sherry to make it 57-28.
Dylan Mildfeldt dropped a triple from the top of the key after a pass from Chet Spire, Spencer Weir got a putback after a Spire steal (one of five on the night), and Dylan Mildfeldt got a pullup to give NEN its biggest lead of 64-28 with 5:31 left in the game.
