DeKalb is one of the loudest, most hostile gyms in the 275, but both North Nodaway teams came away victorious Tuesday night against the Tigers.
The girls won 46-28 in the opener. The teams were seemingly headed in opposite directions, with DeKalb flying high after a second place finish at the Platte Valley Invitational with a 3-1 record, while North Nodaway was denied a trophy in Mound City and started off with a 1-3 record. But North Nodaway led by two at the half and all of a sudden, realized they were the better team and pulled away for the win.
The Mustangs used a balanced attack to come away with the win. Alisha Davison led the scoring with 11 points, while Kristin Herndon had 9, and Kandace Damgar and Audrey Trimble had 7.
The boys, after starting off the season winless at 0-4, got their first win of the season, a 48-29 win over the Tigers. They led from wire to wire and were paced by Arron Coleman with 17 points and 9 boards. The rebounding, which was not there against North Harrison, was there against DeKalb as several players stepped up on the boards. Cody Wood had 9 points and 12 boards, Tyler Bix had 6 points, 7 boards, and 4 assists, and Cole Bird had 6 points, 8 boards, and 2 assists.
“We still need to take care of the ball, and we need to pick up our aggressiveness, but it was nice to get the win after a rough first two weeks,” said Coach Jake Shipman. Added Coleman, “We’re on the same page now as a team.”
