Bubble Bursts as Shamrock Teams Fall to Princeton

The bubble burst for the Shamrock basketball teams as they fell to Princeton Tuesday night. The girls faced one of the stiffest defensive teams that they had faced all year, dug themselves into a 15 point hole, and couldn’t climb out of it as they fell 47-37, aided by a questionable call late in the fourth quarter. The boys game was much more one-sided as Princeton was bigger and quicker than North Harrison as they ran away with the 87-45 win.

Nothing went right for the girls in the first quarter as Payton Craig picked up two early fouls, Princeton’s pressure was forcing them out of their offense, and Jaelyn Thomas was running wild on the offensive glass for Princeton.

North Harrison started to find their footing in the second quarter after Payton Craig hit Brandy Rivet for a 3-pointer and kept it within four. But then the foul differential hit 7-2 in Princeton’s favor and North Harrison went scoreless in the last 4:20. Meanwhile, Princeton turned up the pressure and forced some turnovers off their press to make it 19-8.

Things threatened to go from bad to worse in the third quarter as Thomas hit two free throws for Princeton. But then Lindsey Batson picked up her third foul and sat out for the Blue Tigers. Thomas scored off a steal, but without Batson, Princeton’s best ballhandler and one of their most aggressive players, on the floor, North Harrison finally started coming back.

Payton Craig found daylight and drew a foul and a free throw, Emma Craig got a putback, and Payton Craig scored off a steal to get it down to 10. Payton Goodin hit a 3-pointer to make it 26-13, but Emma Craig cut inside and got a pass from Mason Cracraft, Brandy Rivet hit a 3-pointer after Payton Craig kept a possession alive with an offensive board, and Payton Craig turned a steal into a 3-point play to make it 26-21 after three.

The teams traded buckets in the fourth until Emma Craig hit Brandy Rivet for a guarded 3-pointer in the corner and Payton Craig went coast to coast and hit two free throws to make it 33-30. North Harrison got the ball back, but Payton Craig was called for traveling trying to take on multiple blue shirts and Jaelyn Thomas hit two free throws. Batson jumped a pass and got a layup, then Thomas made a free throw after a steal to make it 38-30 with 1:39 left.

North Harrison got a glimmer of hope again after Batson fouled out trying to guard Mason Cracraft down low, and she hit one of two. Payton Craig went coast to coast after a miss with 52 seconds; Thomas countered with a fast break layup as North Harrison was trying to press and get the ball back, but Payton Craig took on two blue shirts and converted a 3-point play to bring it back to 40-36 with 33 seconds left.

Ashlie Henness missed two free throws for Princeton, but Thomas, one of the best rebounders in the area, grabbed an offensive board and made one of two to make it 41-36. Then, after Princeton got a stop, a questionable intentional foul call on Payton Craig ended it for all practical purposes after Payton Goodin hit both free throws and Princeton aired it out for a layup to create an insurmountable 45-36 lead. Craig had barely touched Goodin with her hands, yet the referee called it an intentional foul.

Payton Craig led the scoring for North Harrison with 18 points. Brandy Rivet had 10, Emma Craig 4, Mason Cracraft 3, and Addie Slaughter 2.
