Worth County’s boys ran the table at North Harrison to clinch their second tournament of the year and finish the season with one loss. The Tigers’ lone loss was to Stanberry when they were without Alex Rinehart, who had sustained a football injury and was not back yet.
The first two games were nerve-wracking, with Worth County winning by nine against Albany and withstanding several charges by North Harrison to win their second game 57-44. But it was a vast improvement over last year, when the Tigers faded in the last three games in the same building and dropped all three to end their season.
But the Princeton game presented no such difficulty. Worth County scored the first 16 points of the game and never looked back in a 50-18 win to cap off their season. Jackson Runde had a career night with 22 points, while Aydan Gladstone had 14 for the Tigers.
Aydan Gladstone hit Jackson Runde backdoor to start the scoring; then, Gladstone hit a shot on the left wing off a Grant Cameron steal. Jackson Runde hit a triple from the baseline with 4:30 left; then, Aydan Gladstone got a steal six seconds later and got on the line to hit two free throws to make it 10-0 just over 1:06 into the game.
Then, Jackson Smith and Aydan Gladstone both got their hands on an errant pass before Gladstone got hold of it and aired it out to Alex Rinehart for a layup. Aydan Gladstone aired one out to Jackson Runde for a layup and then Runde scored to cap the run. Jackson Runde had 13 in the first quarter.
Logan Smith’s putback put Princeton on the board after Princeton did the five-in five-out drill, but Worth County continued to pull away for the remainder of the period. Aydan Gladstone hit Jackson Runde and Gladstone hit a free throw off a steal to make it 21-2 after one.
Jackson Runde and Levi Cassavaugh scored off steals for the Tigers before Princeton finally scored consecutive tallies as Ethan Matthews threw up a prayer that went in and Luke Kelly hit a 3-pointer to make it 25-7 with 2:56 left in the second.
But then Worth County went right back to work as Alex Rinehart aired one to Aydan Gladstone for a layup, Jackson Smith scored off an Aydan Gladstone steal, Alex Rinehart converted a 3-point play after a steal, and Jackson Runde scored after a Grant Cameron offensive board to make it 34-7 with 1:20 left.
The highlight of the night came next when Aydan Gladstone swiped a ball and left two blue shirts sprawled on the floor as he went in for a layup for the Tigers. Alex Rinehart added a free throw and the Tigers were up 37-7 at the half. Lucas Wake scored four in the third and pushed Worth County to its biggest lead of 48-13 at the 1:51 mark of the period.
