The Northeast Nodaway baseball team is hoping to overcome a brutal early schedule and peak by the end of the season this year. Their first two games were against powerhouse teams St. Joseph Christian and Mid-Buchanan. The Bluejays lost the first game 13-3 and the Mid-Buchanan game 12-0.
The next two games will be no easier for the Bluejays, as they face King City, which won only six games last year, but returns everyone for this year and is expected to contend for a GRC West title. Their next game will be against Maryville, who is young, but is still a Class 3 school.
Last year, the Bluejays faced a similar rocky road, only to catch fire, win three straight, and make it into the district finals against Maysville. Two of those wins were against teams with winning records.
They return many of their faces from that team last year, and return coaches Cody Green and Andrew Freemyer. Ike Werner will also join the staff this year.
There are five Worth County players on the squad this year; they are Brayden Stevens, Jace Cameron, Carter Chapman, Camdain Frisch, and Dale Deardorff. There are eight Northeast Nodaway players on the time this year; they are Jake Redden, Landon Wilmes, Chase Clabaugh, Chase Allen, Keegan Hansen, Reece Gray, Lance Runde, and Gage Bodle.
The biggest challenge will be replacing long-time catcher Grant McIntyre, who stepped into a pitching role down the stretch to help the Bluejays. Brayden Stevens has the most returning experience out of the returning pitchers. Carter Chapman or Landon Wilmes will handle catching duties.
