1895 Saw Attempted Murder of 10 Year Old in The Nation

The July 30th, 1895 Grant City Star had a correspondent from The Nation who wrote about an attempted murder there:

Tuesday morning, Marlen Gale, living on Charles Murray’s farm, became enraged and attempted to kill his ten-year old boy, Willie, with a club. The boy ran away, going to William Roach’s, who succeeded in keeping Gale away from him. The boy was taken to William Ward’s for protection.

Some of the neighbors went to Gale’s house to try and pacify him, but he still threatened to kill the boy whenever he got sight of him.

James Skelton went to Squire Rankin and procured a warrant for the would-be murderer’s arrest. He was arrested and given a preliminary trial the same day. In lieu of bond, he was taken to the Bethany jail to await the action of the Grand Jury.
