Junior High Tiger Girls, Shamrock Boys Win at First Ever North Harrison Meet

Worth County’s girls and North Harrison’s junior high boys won at the first ever event held at the North Harrison Sports Complex Tuesday, April 9th. It was the first win by a North Harrison track squad since 2017, when the North Harrison varsity girls won the HDC Conference meet that year.

In the fall of 2015, a group of patrons gathered and named themselves the North Harrison Sports Complex Booster Club. They began to make plans to finance a football field surrounded by an eight lane all weather track to benefit the students and community. The North Harrison School Board and then-Superintendent Rick Johnson contributed $20,000 in school funds for the project.

Janice Borey and Julie Tracy of Worth County were commissioned to write a Land & Water Conservation Fund Grant from the Missouri DNR and the project was awarded $150,000. Land adjacent to school property was purchased from Stuart and Peggy Slatten. Commitments of labor, equipment, and supplies followed. Weather and staffing delays and COVID-19 halted progress until Brian Nail became involved. He was instrumental in the completion of the track and built a parking lot at his own expense.

Randy Garrett was the Project Manager. Briggs & Cracraft and Briggs Transportation, including Jack Briggs, Greg Cracraft, and Danny Estrada helped with the project. BTC Bank donated over $5,000 to the project. Verimore Bank donated $2,500. Labor, supply, and equipment donations totaled $165,000. Local cash donations were $17,500. The total cost of the project was nearly $300,000, and North Harrison superintendents Rick Johnson, Todd Willhite, J.W. Brandt, and Ethan Sickels along with the respective school boards all helped come up with money to keep the project afloat. The City of Eagleville provided over $30,000 towards the purchase of the land, fencing the track, and the initial purchase of track equipment. The Pawnee Peppers 4-H Club and Grassroots Organization came up with the money for bleachers.

North Harrison has had 14 track and field athletes medal at state since 1952 with only gravel roads and a playground to practice on. The goal is to have many more do so.
