Saylor Brown Nearly Gets Triple Double as Mustang Girls Snap Losing Skid

Saylor Brown nearly got a triple double, getting 11 points, 9 boards, and 9 assists as North Nodaway's girls snapped a three game losing streak by getting a 63-50 win over Mound City Tuesday night. North Nodaway had a brutal stretch, beginning with a 52-41 courtwarming loss to Braymer. They played a good game against DeKalb but lost despite Saryn Brown's 21 points, falling 55-47. Then, pitted against #1 Platte Valley, they held them down defensively as well as any team has done in the area but still lost, falling 40-15.

Needing something to break out of the slump, North Nodaway was pitted against Mound City, which had two six-footers in its starting lineup. The Panthers were crashing the offensive boards all night, getting the ball to their bigs, and the only way that North Nodaway could win was to keep scoring, which they did.

North Nodaway has had some games where they have started off fast, and they have had others where they have needed time to figure out the other team. They started off fast against Mound City, and while the Panthers made several charges, they never led the Mustangs. Jacquelyn Cline scored off a drive, Saryn Brown got a steal and then added a free throw, and Saylor Brown hit a 3-pointer after a pass from Lauren Herndon to make it 8-0.

Mound City started fighting back as Laukemper scored four straight, #50 (their other six-footer) hit a shot, and Sydney Meadows hit a free throw to cut it to 8-7. North Nodaway stopped the bleeding from the free throw line, hitting six straight from there and adding a drive from Cline as they led 16-14 after one. One of North Nodaway's trips to the line came when Saylor Brown made a highlight film play, breaking one of the Panther defenders' ankles, getting into the high post, and finding Saryn Brown down low; Saryn drew a foul and hit both free throws on the play.

The Panthers hung around until early in the second quarter, when Saylor Brown cut inside and got a pass from Saryn, Saylor Brown hit Jacquelyn Cline for a drive, Saryn Brown added a free throw, Cline got loose in transition and got a pass from Saryn Brown, and Lauren Herndon got on the board with a 3-pointer to make it 28-18 with 2:53 left. Mound City cut it to 28-20, but then Saylor Brown hit Saryn Brown inside, Jacquelyn Cline hit a 3-pointer off a pass from Lauren Herndon, and Herndon got loose inside to make it 35-20 at the half.

Mound City made a charge to start the second half, making use of their height to score the first four points. Saryn Brown hit from the left wing after Jacquelyn Cline had kept a possession alive with an offensive board, Saylor Brown jumped a pass and scored, and Cline hit two free throws to make it 41-26, but Meadows got the hot hand for Mound City, hitting from distance twice as they cut it to nine at 41-32 and then eight at 43-35 with 1:35 left in the third. But the Panthers would get no closer as Jacquelyn Cline hit a badly needed 3-pointer after Lauren Herndon kept a possession alive with an offensive board and Cline found Saryn Brown all alone to make it 48-35.

Saryn Brown carried the team on her shoulders to start the fourth as she hit a 3-pointer to make it 51-36. Mound City started getting the ball into Laukemper and cut it to 51-39, but then Saylor Brown led Saryn with a perfect bounce pass to the rim, and she converted a three point play to make it 54-39. Again, Mound City rallied as they hit a couple of 3-pointers to cut it to 55-45, but then Saylor Brown scored off a drive, Saryn Brown cut inside and got a free throw, and Jacquelyn Cline hit Lauren Herndon for three to make it 61-45. Angie Parker yanked the ball out of the hands of one of Mound City's six footers during that stretch, and later threw a pass off the backboard to herself and scored down the stretch.

Saryn Brown had 21 points; this was her second 21 point game in three games. Jacquelyn Cline had 20, Saylor Brown 11, Lauren Herndon 8, and Angie Parker 3.

Lauren Herndon had 2 blocks.

Saylor Brown had 9 boards. Saryn Brown, Ellaina Renfro, and Lauren Herndon all had 6, Angie Parker 4, Kelsi Barcus 2, and Jacquelyn Cline 1.

Saylor Brown had 9 assists. Saryn Brown and Jacquelyn Cline had 5 each, Lauren Herndon 4, and Kelsi Barcus and Ellaina Renfro 1.

Jacquelyn Cline, Lauren Herndon, and Saryn Brown all had 2 tips. Saylor Brown and Angie Parker had 1.

Saryn Brown and Lauren Herndon had 4 steals. Jacquelyn Cline had 2 and Kelsi Barcus and Saylor Brown had 1 each.

Mound City 77, North Nodaway Boys 33

The Mustang boys, after a heartbreaking 58-48 loss to DeKalb, are still searching for their first win. They led by as much as 12 behind the shooting of Brice Trimble (19 points) before fading in the second half and falling. They didn't get it at Mound City, as Tony Osborn had 36 points and the #1 Mound City squad pulled away in the second half. The Mustang boys dug themselves into a 21-3 hole in the first quarter, but then played one of their best quarters of the year and still had a chance, trailing 37-21 at the half before Mound City pulled away in the third and fourth quarter.

Ethan Fry had 9 points to lead the Mustangs. Aydan Blackford had 7, Jeremiah Dobbins 5, Mason Richardson 4, and Damian Dailey, Brice Trimble, Owen Martin, and Preston Hansen all with 2.
