Aydan Gladstone scored his 1,000th career point Friday as Worth County won its third straight, beating DeKalb 67-34. The Tigers have finally started to peak at the right time after it wasn’t clear from night to night earlier in the year which team would show up. Five different players reached double figures in the win, and ten different Tigers collected at least one board.
Jackson Smith sparked the Tigers early, getting 8 points in the first period, getting an inside shot, scoring off a steal, getting loose in transition, and getting a putback. Aydan Gladstone scored four quick points, but then was stuck on 996 points, needing eight to surpass the 1,000 point mark that night.
Worth County missed a ton of shots in the first quarter, but still led 16-7 after one quarter after Grant Cameron finished an off-balance drive at the buzzer. DeKalb was putting up a much better fight than King City had three nights before. Nonetheless, Worth County started to pull away in the second after Jackson Runde got untracked in the second, getting 8 in the period. With DeKalb hanging around at 21-12, Worth County finally gained some separation as Jackson Runde scored off a drive, Grant Cameron scored after Runde got a steal and aired it out to him, Tyler New got a steal, and Jackson Smith got a putback to make it 29-12.
As they did against Northeast Nodaway and North Nodaway, DeKalb kept coming, refusing to give up easily as Devin Hall scored off a drive and Lance Kelly got loose twice to cut it to 29-18. But Grant Cameron hit a 3-pointer, as did Jackson Runde to make It 35-18. Wyatt Miller cut it to 35-20, but then Jackson Runde got a steal, threw it to Aydan Gladstone, and threw it to Tyler New for a finish with 5 seconds left to make it 37-20 at the half.
Chris Wienmann hit a 3-pointer for DeKalb to start the third, but then Jackson Smith hit Aydan Gladstone inside and Jackson Runde hit a 3-pointer. On the next possession, Aydan Gladstone got a steal and drew a foul, hitting both fouls to finally reach 1,000 points at the 5:10 mark of the third quarter.
That seemed to get him untracked, and he took over the rest of the third quarter, beating DeKalb up and down the floor, capitalizing on some teammates’ steals, and getting a couple of putbacks. When the dust had settled, Gladstone had scored 18 in the third quarter and the Tigers were up 58-29 after three.
Grant Cameron and Tyler New hit 3-pointers in the fourth as the Tigers continued to pull away for the final score.
