Dalanie Auffert got a double double with 11 points and 14 boards and Baylie Busby's runner with 30 seconds broke a tie and gave Northeast Nodaway the lead for good as they beat North Harrison 27-23 Tuesday, February 7th. For Northeast, despite all they have been through with injuries and illnesses, they were still able to improve on last year's two win mark with a few games to spare. For North Harrison, they put up a good fight against Maggie Collins and Platte Valley the night before; the scoreboard did not show the effort that they put up against the top ranked team in the state as they lost 50-22. But they have struggled in back to back nights; they led Northeast going into the fourth quarter, but ran out of gas in the last two minutes. Previously, they struggled against King City the night after putting up an impressive win against Gilman City at the start of January.
Northeast had nearly pulled off an improbable win over Union Star the Friday before; they were down to three players and were nearly down to two, yet had a chance to win before falling to the Trojans 42-36. It was an echo of two years before, when Union Star was down to three players, yet had a chance to beat Northeast before falling 50-47.
The Bluejays were back up to six players for Tuesday's game, which made a big difference. Lauren McIntyre, who was under the weather for the Union Star game, was well enough to come back; she gave Northeast valuable minutes off the bench, as they were able to rest players or protect them from foul trouble. And when Jaden Atkins got her fifth foul, Northeast was still able to have five players on the floor at the end.
The game was bound to be close in a game of two teams desperate to win, but it was Northeast that came through on the boards as they outrebounded North Harrison 36-22 that night. The Shamrocks, although they battled gamely, didn't have anyone as tall as Dalanie Auffert. Several other Bluejays chipped in as well, with Sasha Deardorff playing one of her best games as a Bluejay, grabbing 7.
Northeast looked sharp on offense in the early going as Dalanie Auffert and Jaden Atkins hit free throws, Baylie Busby got a putback, and Jaden Atkins scored from inside to put Northeast up 6-3. But then Erin Virtue came in to spark the Shamrocks with her rebounding, and the green shirts fought their way back in front 7-6 after one after baskets from Trendi Johnson and Jaci Davis.
Baylie Busby hit a tough shot in the high post with a hand in her face to start the second quarter to spark the Bluejays. Hadley DeFreece hit a 3-pointer and Dalanie Auffert got a putback to make it 13-7. Up to that point, Northeast hadn't turned the ball over. But then North Harrison started mixing their half court trap in with their normal defense and started generating more pressure, and they fought back as Northeast had some good looks down the stretch in the first half, but went ice cold. Trendi Johnson's shot brought the Shamrocks to within 13-11, and then Jayliegh Robins' putback at the start of the third tied it up at 13. Robins was instrumental on defense, rejecting Auffert in the paint several times despite giving up some height to her.
Camden Castleberry threatened to take over for the Shamrocks in the second half as she slashed to the rim with 2:08 left to put the Shamrocks in front 16-15. Baylie Busby cut inside and got an inbounds pass from Hadley DeFreece to put Northeast back up 17-16, but Camden hit a guarded three in the closing seconds of the third quarter to put North Harrison up 19-17.
But then Dalanie Auffert somehow got the ball away from two Shamrocks who were trying to fight for a board and stuck it back in with 6:42 left to tie it, and then Baylie Busby chased down a long rebound and went coast to coast to untie it, hitting both free throws to make it 21-19 with 6:28 left. Camden Castleberry's free throw cut it to 21-20, but Auffert's putback with 4:56 left made it 23-20. Camden Castleberry countered with a 3-pointer with 4:17 left to tie it again at 23-23.
Both sides had their chances in the closing minutes, but Jayliegh Robins stuffed Auffert in the paint, only to miss two free throws with 1:45 left as Northeast secured the rebound. With Jaden Atkins on the bench with five fouls, Northeast held the ball and was able to take all but 30 seconds off the clock before Baylie Busby drove into the high post with 30 seconds left and hit a pullup to put Northeast in front 25-23.
Jayliegh Robins missed a contested shot inside, but a tieup between her and Auffert went back to North Harrison. North Harrison got Camden Castleberry a good look at a three from the right wing that would have put them in front, but she missed it and Auffert was there for the defensive board. She was fouled, and she hit both free throws to secure the win.
