Levi Cassavaugh, Grant Cameron Quash Polo Threat; Tigers Pull Away in Showcase

Worth County's boys survived a rocky start against Polo and pulled away in the second half to get a 62-39 win Saturday in the GRC Showcase. They were one of only four GRC West schools to win over the East that day. Stanberry beat Putnam County in one of the other two wins 50-49 in overtime to win the GRC Title and were mobbed by the Milan players, with whom Putnam County has a big rivalry. Pattonsburg beat South Harrison and North Andrew beat Gallatin for the other GRC West wins. None of the girls squads won that day.

Against Polo, the Tigers got off to a rocky start, turning the ball over right and left against the lengthy, athletic squad from Polo, and letting Trent Raby run wild, getting 10 first quarter points. At that point, Polo was up 15-7, Aydan Gladstone had two fouls, and Trent was running wild on the Tigers. Worth County had six turnovers in the period, usually enough for a whole game. But then Worth County switched to a box and one on Raby, with Levi Cassavaugh and then Grant Cameron taking turns on him and shutting him down; Trent did not score again until the fourth quarter.

Jackson Runde scored off a steal to start the second and Jackson Smith hit a free throw, but Maverick Gentry hit a backdoor layup to keep Polo up 17-10 at the 6:12 mark. But then Worth County started cleaning up their turnovers and coming back. Aydan Gladstone got a putback and then Tyler New got a steal and fed Aydan Gladstone, who fed Jackson Runde for the finish. Aydan Gladstone got a blocked shot, which set up a Grant Cameron pass to Tyler New, Tyler New fed Aydan Gladstone for a layup, and then Aydan Gladstone aired one out to New to put the Tigers up 20-17 before a late Polo steal cut it to 20-19 at the half.

The two teams traded blows to start the third quarter before a four point play put the Tigers up for good. Levi Cassavaugh scored off a drive to the basket, drew the foul, and missed a free throw. But Aydan Gladstone got the offensive board and got it to Jackson Runde to make it 26-23 with five minutes left. That was the key turning point of the game.

From there, Worth County went on a 27-1 run that extended into the fourth quarter. Tyler New hit two free throws off a drive. Another New drive set up Runde in the high post. Then, nobody matched up with Grant Cameron, who hit a 3-pointer from the corner to make it 33-23. Zadin Owens' free throw temporarily stopped the bleeding, but then Aydan Gladstone scored off a drive, as did Tyler New to make it 38-24. Aydan Gladstone aired one out to Grant Cameron, Tyler New got a steal and fed Grant Cameron, and Aydan Gladstone hit a shot from the high post to make it 44-24 after three.

Tyler New scored off a steal, Grant Cameron got another, and Tyler New fed Grant Cameron in transition to make it 50-24 before Worth County started emptying the benches. Polo got untracked from behind the 3-point line to cut it to 53-33, but then Jackson Smith hit a 3-pointer, as did Jackson Runde. Aydan Gladstone added a free throw to make it 60-33.

Tyler New had 16 points for the Tigers. Jackson Runde had 14, Aydan Gladstone 13, Grant Cameron 11, Jackson Smith 4, and Levi Cassavaugh and Jace Cousatte 2 each.

Aydan Gladstone had 9 boards. Jackson Runde had 8, Tyler New 6, Jackson Smith 4, Grant Cameron 3, Levi Cassavaugh 2, and Brent Harris and Jace Cousatte 1 each.

Aydan Gladstone had 9 assists as he nearly had a triple double. Tyler New had 6, Jackson Runde and Grant Cameron 4 each, and Levi Cassavaugh 1.

Tyler New had 5 tips, Grant Cameron 3, Jackson Smith 2, and Aydan Gladstone and Jackson Runde 1 each.

Tyler New had 7 steals. Aydan Gladstone, Grant Cameron, and Jackson Smith all had 5. Tanner Ridge had 2, and Jackson Runde and Levi Cassavaugh had 1 each.
