Northeast Nodaway held off a frantic South Holt rally on Senior Night Friday, getting the 60-48 win after struggling to keep them off the boards in the first half and struggling to take care of the ball in the second. There were five Bluejay seniors playing in their last home game. They were Zach Pride, Lane Dack, Ben Boswell, Colton Swalley, and Auston Pride. All were recognized before Friday's game.
Things started off well for the Bluejays as Ben Boswell hit Lane Dack cutting inside and he added a steal to make it 4-0. Dylan McIntyre cut inside and got a pass from Colton Swalley to make it 10-4, and he got the hot hand as the Bluejays led by as much as 15-6. Jayce Jackson hit a guarded three to cut it to 15-9, but Ben Boswell got a steal at the end of the first quarter to make it 17-9.
Ben Boswell's steal early in the second made it 23-11, but South Holt, very much like DeKalb, does not have a lot of size, but keeps coming at you throughout the game regardless of the score. In addition, the players all know each other and naturally wanted to beat each other. Sure enough, a freshman for the Knights, Cole Medsker, got the hot hand and scored seven of the Knights' next nine points as they cut the Bluejay lead to 23-20.
But then South Holt started leaving Dylan McIntyre open behind the defense, and Northeast figured out they could feed him at will, which they did throughout the remainder of the half. The Bluejays scored the next 11 points, all by McIntyre, as they pulled away to a 34-20 lead at the half.
The Knights were not an easy team to play against; despite their small size, they were flying to the offensive glass and collected 10 offensive boards in the first half. Northeast cleaned it up in the third quarter as Ben Boswell got the hot hand and Auston Pride and Lane Dack chipped in as they pulled away to a 45-24 lead. South Holt got a couple of steals and cut it to 45-29, but then Dylan McIntyre got the hot hand and scored six of the next eight Bluejay points, and they pulled ahead to a 53-31 lead after three despite Auston Pride sitting with three fouls.
But Tylynn Prussman and Cade Kurtz hit 3-pointers to start the fourth for the Knights, and South Holt threw a half court trap at Northeast that they were not ready for. Dylan McIntyre hit a free throw with 6:17 left to make it 56-37 and Zach Pride took a charge on defense, but the Knights kept coming, getting a 3-pointer and a three point play from Kendall Noland to cut it to 56-43 and a basket from Prussman to make it 57-45. Noland fouled out, but Cade Kurtz scored three for the Knights to cut it to 58-48 before Northeast finally stopped the bleeding and ran out the clock.
