Paige Sherer did all she could to get Worth County's girls a third win, but North Nodaway doused their upset hopes in the second half, pulling away for a 49-34 win Thursday. Previously, the Tigers played a forgettable courtwarming game, throwing the ball away 39 times in their 53-19 loss to Pattonsburg, in which Webby Bailey scored her 2,000th career point. They didn't let Jillian Plymell go off for five threes in a row like they did the previous two years, but little else went right for them.
They played without Kynah Steele in the Pattonsburg loss (illness), but got her back for the North Nodaway game. Things threatened to go from bad to worse even before the game started as the bus was late and didn't get there until 30 minutes before gametime. That, and the fact that they were playing on back to back nights did not bode well. Then, Saryn Brown hit a 3-pointer for North Nodaway right off the bat.
But all of a sudden, a totally different Tiger team took the floor, and it was Paige Sherer and Kynah Steele who sparked the Tigers, along with Liz Brown on the boards. Sherer was suddenly getting behind the Mustang defense for four quick points and she fed Steele inside for another basket as the Tigers hung right with North Nodaway through the first eight minutes. They took the lead at 8-7 when Abbi Brown hit Sherer for her sixth point of the quarter. Saylor Brown hit a 3-pointer, but Abbi Brown hit Kynah Steele inside to knot it up at 10-10 after one.
Worth County was still turning the ball over, but they were rebounding much better; they outrebounded the Mustangs 11-6 in the first quarter.
Ali Brown scored from inside for the Tigers to start the second to put them up 12-10, but it looked like North Nodaway would finally take control when Jacquelyn Cline and Saryn Brown hit back to back jacks to make it 16-12. But once again, Worth County fought back as Ali Brown scored from inside. Then, Bridgette Hightshoe jumped a pass, missed the wide open layup, but stuck with the play and grabbed the offensive board to knot it at 16 before Saryn Brown's free throw put North Nodaway back in front 17-16 at the half.
Coming out of the locker room, Saylor Brown had a look in her eye that she was not going to let her team lose to Worth County her senior year. Paige Sherer's baseline drive put Worth County up 20-18 early in the third quarter, but all of a sudden, Saylor went totally bezerk on the defensive end, tipping passes right and left and totally disrupting the Tiger offense; she got most of her 12 tips in the third quarter. The Mustangs, after being killed on the boards in the first half, rebounded better in the second and the rebounds evened out by the end of the game. And the shots finally started falling; Jacquelyn Cline hit two 3-pointers and Saryn Brown one to put North Nodaway up for good at 27-20.
Autumn Cousatte temporarily stopped the bleeding with a 3-pointer, but Saylor Brown answered with one of her own. Jacquelyn Cline got a steal, took on Autumn Cousatte, and got the benefit of a charge/block call; she missed the free throw, but the Mustangs were up 32-23. Lauren Herndon got untracked with a 3-pointer after a Saryn Brown kickout and added a steal, and North Nodaway was up 37-23 after three quarters.
North Nodaway bled the clock down to 5:33 left in the fourth before Worth County finally got a stop and Liz Brown hit Kynah Steele inside. Saylor Brown threw a pass to Jacquelyn Cline behind the defense, but Paige Sherer cut it to 39-27. Saylor Brown drew a foul and hit two free throws, got fouled on the rebound while making the second, and hit the third to make it 42-27, only for Ali Brown to hit a free throw, miss the second, and Liz Brown to get the board and get her the ball. This time, Ali Brown hit both to cut it to 42-30 again.
But North Nodaway finally pulled away as Saylor Brown hit Saryn on the right side and Lauren Herndon hit two free throws to make it 46-30. Kynah Steele countered with a free throw, but Lauren Herndon hit from the right side to give North Nodaway its biggest lead at 48-31, promoting wholesale substitutions.
