Work on Ramp to Connect Route 759 to 36 to Resume

A project to rehabilitate the westbound Buchanan County U.S. Route 36 Pony Express Bridge over the Missouri River will resume next week after being shut down for the winter. Contractors from Comanche Construction Inc., working with the Missouri Department of Transportation, are scheduled to begin pouring concrete Wednesday, April 5 at the ramp from Route 759 to westbound U.S. Route 36.

The ramp, and westbound driving lane on the east end (St. Joseph side) of the bridge, are currently closed and expected to reopen by May 16, 2023. The remaining work, including pouring concrete, painting and structural rehabilitation, are temperature-sensitive tasks that can now be completed due to the warmer weather.

The project began in January 2022 and crews were able to complete the rehabilitation of the eastbound bridge ahead of schedule in early November 2022. The project was expected to be complete by December 2022, but necessary additional work was added causing the project timeline to be extended through June 2023.
