Tiger Girls Get Back to Winning Formula Against Trojans

Morgan Beagle got 14 boards for the Worth County Tigers and the girls got back to what worked for them in their 43-27 win over Nodaway-Holt last Wednesday in the first round of the Northwest Missouri Tournament. Previously, the Tigers had lost 69-43 to Pattonsburg; Worth County got away from their game plan and tried to win a track meet against the explosive Panther squad, to no avail. Against Nodaway-Holt, they got back to their winning formula of holding teams to under 40 points and getting balanced scoring on offense. They overcame 19 turnovers and 13 offensive boards in the win. After their successful run to the tournament title, they stood at 8-2 when allowing fewer than 40 points in a game.

The focus of the game was to take care of the ball against Nodaway-Holt’s 2-2-1 press and keep post players Shaina Culp and Chloe Jenkins from going off in the post and getting Worth County into foul trouble. The Tigers got off to a fast start, as Jill Hardy scored off a Megan Cassavaugh steal, EmiLee Brown hit two free throws, and Hardy added a 3-pointer as the Tigers took a 7-2 lead early.

But following a pair of missed free throws, Nodaway-Holt was able to come back using four straight from Culp and using steals off the press. Megan Cassavaugh countered with a 3-pointer to put the Tigers up 10-6 after one, and somehow, they had the lead despite turning the ball over 7 times in the period.

The red shirts hung around for much of the second quarter, cutting it to two several times in the period. But then Chloe Jenkins picked up her third foul and EmiLee Brown got a putback with 26 seconds and then converted a steal at the buzzer to put Worth County up 20-13 at the half.

EmiLee Brown continued to have the hot hand for Worth County in the third quarter, as Worth County was able to get her the ball at will. Shaina Culp had the hot hand for the Trojans, but Brown got her second buzzer beater in as many quarters as she cleaned up after a Cassavaugh steal to put Worth County up 30-21 after three.

Nodaway-Holt made a concerted effort to get the ball into Jenkins at the start of the fourth; she scored four straight to start the period and they twice cut it to five. But then Jill Hardy scored off a drive, Braidy Hunt added a free throw and then got a steal, and then Megan Cassavaugh scored off a drive to make it 39-27. Nodaway-Holt was forced to come out and guard them, and Worth County was able to take big chunks of time off the clock and put it away at the line, shooting 11 for 17 from the free throw line.

EmiLee Brown had 12 points for the Tigers. Jill Hardy had 10, Braidy Hunt 9, Megan Cassavaugh 8, and Morgan Beagle and Kara Staton 2 each.

Morgan Beagle had 14 boards as Worth County was able to limit Nodaway-Holt’s second chance opportunities; they only scored six second chance points for the game. Jill Hardy had 8, EmiLee Brown 7, Braidy Hunt 6, Kynah Steele 3, Megan Cassavaugh 2, and Kara Staton 1.

Megan Cassavaugh had 6 assists. Jill Hardy and EmiLee Brown had 2, and Braidy Hunt had 1.

Megan Cassavaugh had 9 tips. Braidy Hunt had 7, EmiLee Brown 6, Morgan Beagle and Kynah Steele 4 each, Liz Brown 2, and Jill Hardy and Kara Staton 1 each.

Braidy Hunt had 6 steals. Megan Cassavaugh had 5, Morgan Beagle and Jill Hardy 3 each, and Taylor Sanders, EmiLee Brown, and Justina Wimer 1 each.
