Ben Boswell Leads Shorthanded Bluejays Past Knights

Ben Boswell led three Bluejays in double figures as Northeast reversed a dry spell against South Holt by beating the Knights 48-38. They were playing without Dylan McIntyre, who was injured in the previous game, but Lane Dack, normally a role player, stepped up and hit 12 points, while Auston Pride had his usual output with 15 points. Northeast had not beaten South Holt in any of the previous four meetings between the two teams since the Platte Valley Conference and the Highway 275 merged.

The teams played evenly throughout the first quarter as nobody led by more than one possession. Lane Dack had 6 points in the quarter for the Bluejays and Auston Pride 4, but Dylan Schuetz’s free throws put the Knights in front 11-10 after one.

The Knights threatened to take control in the second quarter, going up 17-12 as Northeast was stagnant on offense, but then Ben Boswell got a putback and then added a three point play in transition to tie it at 17. Brody Scroggins scored off a drive for South Holt, but Zach Pride’s runner with five seconds left tied it up at halftime at 19.

Ben Boswell erupted in the third quarter, starting with a tip and steal. Another Boswell steal led to a Zach Pride feed to Lane Dack, and Ben Boswell hit one from the high post to make it 25-19. Auston Pride added a free throw and Ben Boswell scored one from the left side to make it 28-19, forcing South Holt into a timeout.

But South Holt could afford to be very aggressive on defense as Northeast had only been to the line three times up to that points; the Knights had a lot of fouls to give. They started coming back, and Scroggins’ three point play cut it to 28-24. But Northeast managed to break the run as Boswell and Pride both hit 3-pointers to keep Northeast in front 36-30 after three.

South Holt made another push to get to within 36-34, but Northeast finally got in the bonus and lived off the free throw line in the fourth quarter. After only going to the line three times in the first three quarters, Northeast scored all 12 of their points from the line in the fourth.

The Knights had a chance to tie or take the lead at one point, but then Ben Boswell got a steal, missed, but Lane Dack was there for the offensive glass, and he drew a foul and hit both free throws to make it 38-34. Northeast started running the clock, and Auston Pride, Ben Boswell, and Lane Dack all took trips to the free throw line as the Bluejays slowly pulled away for the win. After only going to the line only three times through the first three quarters, Northeast was 12 for 18 in the fourth quarter. They were 14 for 21 for the game.

Ben Boswell had 19 points. Auston Pride had 15, Lane Dack 12, and Zach Pride 2.

Auston Pride had 9 boards. Colton Swalley had 5, Lane Dack 4, and Zach Pride and Ben Boswell 2 each.

Colton Swalley had 5 assists. Ben Boswell and Zach Pride had 3 each, Lane Dack 2, and Auston Pride 1.

Ben Boswell had 4 tips. Zach Pride and Lane Dack had 2, and Colton Swalley had 1.

Ben Boswell had 7 steals. Lane Dack and Zach Pride had 4 each, and Brayden Munns and Colton Swalley had 1 each.

The girls fought hard against the Knights, only trailing by five points going into the fourth, but South Holt pulled away in the fourth for the 49-35 win.
