Camden Castleberry got a double double on Tuesday, February 9th and North Harrison's girls snapped a three game losing streak, beating Grundy County 45-12 in their first game of the HDC Tournament. The Shamrocks had played three teams in King City, Albany, and Mercer tough, only to fall short each time. They were struggling to score, getting in the 20's two times and getting 33 in overtime the other time. Defensively, the effort was there.
But after a slow start, they jumped out to a 17-2 lead against Grundy County after one and continued to pull away the rest of the game. For the second time, Camden was the Panther slayer; in the first game between the two teams, she had 20 points. Naturally, the Panthers sought to shut her down, but she still got loose on the wing and secured a ton of rebounds. Emma Craig got the Shamrocks off to a fast start, and both she and Jayliegh Robins did a good job pressuring the ball, getting 7 steals each for the night.
It didn't help Grundy that one of their best players; Lanie Lewis, took a quick seat with two fouls as Emma Craig drove and set up Kami Gibson for two free throws. Emma drive the baseline again and this time found Jayliegh Robins for two more free throws. That softened up the Panther defense; the Shamrocks were hitting their free throws, to the tune of 12 for 16 from the line. Emma Craig got a steal and slipped past two defenders, a Jayliegh Robins block set up a fast break, with Emma feeding Camden Castleberry for the finish. Erin Virtue hit Jayliegh Robins backdoor, and Emma Craig got a steal to make it 12-0 and prompt a timeout. North Harrison had put together 12 points in a three minute span.
After the timeout, Emma Craig scored off a Jayliegh Robins steal. Carly Smith went backdoor and scored to break the shutout for Grundy, but Emma Craig hit a 3-pointer to make it 17-2 after one.
North Harrison found it tougher going with Lewis on the floor for Grundy, and they missed three free throws in the second. But they continued to pull away as Emma Craig hit a free throw, Trendi Johnson hit a shot from the high post, Kami Gibson got a putback, and Emma Craig scored after Kami Gibson got an offensive board as the Shamrocks pulled away to a 24-5 lead.
Camden Castleberry, who had been ice cold in the first half, got untracked with a 3-pointer to start the third quarter; it was her shooting in the second half that helped put the game away. Kami Gibson hit Jayliegh Robins backdoor. Skylar Bonnett got loose backdoor for Grundy, but then Camden hit two free throws after getting an offensive board and Jayliegh Robins hit Emma Craig backdoor to make it 33-7.
Lillian Fordyce hit a guarded three to cut it to 33-10, but then Camden Castleberry grabbed another offensive board and drew another foul, hitting two more free throws and then Erin Virtue hit Kami Gibson backdoor to make it 37-10 after three. Kami Gibson hit two free throws and Camden Castleberry hit back to back threes in the fourth to trigger the running clock.
Camden Castleberry had 15 for the Shamrocks. Emma Craig had 14, Kami Gibson 8, Jayliegh Robins 6, and Trendi Johnson 2.
Camden Castleberry had 10 boards to complete the double double. Jayliegh Robins and Kami Gibson had 6 each, Emma Craig 5, and Halle Morgan and Erin Virtue 2 each.
Emma Craig had 5 assists. Erin Virtue and Kami Gibson had 3 each, Jayliegh Robins and Camden Castleberry 2 each, and Trendi Johnson 1.
Jayliegh Robins had 5 tips. Camden Castleberry and Kami Gibson had 4 each, Trendi Johnson 2, and Erin Virtue, Emma Craig, and Halle Morgan 1 each.
Emma Craig and Jayliegh Robins had 7 steals each. Kami Gibson and Camden Castleberry had 1 each.
