Kamden Robertson’s Tipin Sparks Shamrocks to Third Place Finish

Kamden Robertson’s tipin at the end of the first quarter sparked the North Harrison boys, who made a big run to put East Harrison down 19 in the second. They held off a Bobcat rally and overcame monster nights from both Mark Willis (25 points) and Adam Rinehart (24 points) to get an 81-54 win to take third place in the HDC Tournament Saturday.

Previously, North Harrison came from behind to beat Gilman City for the third time; pitted against Grundy County, who beat the Shamrocks by the running clock, they played a good game this time before falling 73-61. That pitted them against the Bobcats for the third place battle. Grundy County went on to give Winston, now at 22-1, all they could handle before falling 42-29 to the Redbirds for the tournament title.

The Shamrocks figured to have trouble against their rivals from the east, and sure enough, Rinehart kept the Bobcats in the game as they wiped out an early 7-3 deficit to tie it at 7. Nick Babinski scored from inside and added a free throw, Grant Claycomb got an offensive glass and converted it into two free throws, but Willis scored off a steal to cut it to 12-9. North Harrison had a long possession and Cooper Cracraft got it into Brett Emig for two, only for Hunter Kirk to strike back from the wing to cut it to 14-12.

Having played East Harrison three times, the game looked like it was shaping into a dogfight, but then Tyson Gibson missed a 3-pointer with time winding down and Kamden Robertson was there for the tipin at the buzzer to make it 16-12.

That play seemed to spark the Shamrocks. Brett Emig hit Wade Briggs on the baseline for three, Nick Babinski inbounded to Brett Emig in traffic and he finished. Grant Claycomb scored off a Wade Briggs steal, and then Brett Emig hit Brandon Hamilton in transition to make it 25-12 to start the second.

East Harrison burned a timeout and Rinehart hit a 3-pointer to break the run, but then Brett Emig got loose in transition and hit two free throws, Wade Briggs hit an NBA 3-pointer, and Emig got loose in transition and then jumped a pass to make it 34-15.

But then East Harrison, who has shown a lot of improvement starting in January, got going as Mark Willis got the hot hand for them, scoring inside to break the run. Emig hit two more free throws, but then Jacoby Roberts hit a free throw and then Willis scored eight straight, cutting the Bobcats’ deficit to 36-26 to start the third.

North Harrison then rebuilt their lead as Wade Briggs hit a 3-pointer after Brandon Hamilton skipped a pass, Brett Emig turned a 2nd chance possession into free throws, and Nick Babinski grabbed an offensive board and hit a reverse layup to make it 43-26 again. Willis kept hitting, but North Harrison was working the boards and stealing the ball at will; Wade Briggs jumped a pass for a layup, and Brett Emig scored four straight to make it 50-30 at the 5:22 mark.

Willis hit a free throw and Roberts hit two free throws to make it 50-33, but then Grant Claycomb hit consecutive shots from the high post. Willis then picked up his fourth foul and North Harrison was able to put the game away as Brett Emig hit two free throws and Wade Briggs got loose after Brandon Hamilton aired one out. Rinehart countered with an NBA 3-pointer, but North Harrison pushed it right back down the floor and Brett Emig converted with a layup; then, he got into the high post and got a pass from Kamden Robertson and hit two free throws to make it 62-36 at the third quarter break.

Cole Kampman got on the board in the fourth quarter, getting a backdoor pass from Cooper Cracraft; Tyson Gibson got a tip and steal and finished at the other end to get on the board as well.
