Brandon Hamilton got his first double double as a Shamrock, Brett Emig had 33 points, and the Shamrocks rode the free throw line to victory Wednesday night, beating Gilman City 73-60 in the HDC Tournament. The Shamrocks went down for the count in the early going, but climbed back in it by the half. They still trailed at the end of three, but then shot 14 for 19 from the line and 22 for 32 overall to pull away for the win.
Previously, North Harrison had beaten Gilman City twice in a pair of high-scoring shootouts. The two schools coop together in football along with Pattonsburg, so naturally, they wanted to beat each other. Gilman City came out firing on all cylinders as Kaden Locker's triple put them up 5-0, four straight from Jory Stotts pushed it to 9-2, and then Cameron Gregg's triple made it 16-6. Brett Emig was the only green shirt scoring for the Shamrocks, getting 11 of North Harrison's 14 points in the opening period. But there seemed to be no stopping the Hawks as Locker hit back to back jacks and Kaleb Fehring added another triple to make it 29-16.
Emig was getting his points, but North Harrison needed something to change if they were to get back in the game. They got it as Brandon Hamilton, who had sparked the Shamrocks in the Maysville win, did so again Wednesday, scoring eight points in the second period as the Shamrocks began to come back. Brody Langfitt's free throws made it 33-22, but then North Harrison began to get to the offensive glass, getting a 10-0 run as Grant Claycomb, Nick Babinski, and Brett Emig all scored on putbacks; Hamilton added a pair of free throws and Emig jumped a pass as the Shamrocks came to within 33-32. Langfitt put the Hawks back up 36-33, but Claycomb jumped a pass to cut it to 36-35 at the break.
Brett Emig scored four straight to start the third quarter, and North Harrison finally pulled ahead 39-36. But then they went ice cold for a long stretch, and they started hacking and fouling on defense. Despite a ton of missed free throws, Gilman City moved back ahead 40-39 on Peyton Taggart's putback, Wade Brigg's triple put North Harrison back up 42-40, but then the Shamrocks went ice cold again as the blue shirts moved ahead by as much as 46-42.
Brandon Hamilton's free throw, Brett Emig's coast to coast score, and Wade Briggs' triple put North Harrison back in front 48-46, but then Kyler Preston's NBA triple at the buzzer put Gilman City back in front 49-48 after three.
Gilman City twice went ahead by three to start the fourth, but North Harrison had gotten into the bonus and they got back into the game from the line after Brett Emig's transition basket brought the Shamrocks to within 53-52. They twice got the ball inside, with Brandon Hamilton and Brett Emig hitting two free throws each, and Wade Briggs hit an NBA 3-pointer to make it 59-53.
Gregg's free throws cut Gilman City's deficit to 60-56, but then Nick Babinski converted a third chance putback and then a costly foul on Stotts, his fifth, opened the floodgates. Hamilton missed both free throws, but Emig was there for the putback to make it 64-56 with four minutes left.
Without Stotts, their best defender, Gilman City didn't have an answer as North Harrison went ahead by double digits to stay. Nick Babinski added two free throws, Brett Emig got loose on the baseline after getting a pass, and then the Shamrocks got a stop and put on a ballhandling clinic, running down the clock from 2:54 to 1:43 before Emig got trapped on the side and North Harrison had to use a timeout. Gilman City fouled Claycomb, who missed both free throws, but the Shamrocks got a stop as Babinski got a tip and Claycomb a steal, and they got free throws from Emig and Claycomb to pull ahead 71-56.
Locker finally broke the run for Gilman City, but Grant Claycomb countered with two free throws to seal the win.
