Jadon Dobbins Sparks Mustang Girls Past Tigers in Revenge Win

Jadon Dobbins sparked North Nodaway with back to back steals early in the second quarter, and North Nodaway hung on for a 37-34 revenge win over Worth County, who had beaten them by 17 in the Northwest Missouri Tournament Championship. Worth County did everything right in Thursday’s game. They kept North Nodaway under 40 points; they have won most of their games when they have held the other team to less than 40. They outrebounded North Nodaway 39-30, and they kept them off the free throw line until the fourth quarter, when they had to foul; North Nodaway only made two trips to the line for the first three quarters. Yet somehow, the Mustangs were still able to come up with the win.

The two big keys were on the defensive end. First, North Nodaway gave up a few of the diagonal passes that burned them in the first game, but not enough to hurt them. Then, the defensive play of Saryn Brown, Karissa Oberhauser, and Ellaina Renfro kept Worth County from getting its post game going. Ellaina Renfro had three blocks on the night.

Whoever controlled the boards in Thursday’s game seemed to have the momentum. First, Worth County controlled the boards and the momentum as they picked up right where they left off in the tournament. Jill Hardy hit a 3-pointer from the right wing and Braidy Hunt added a steal to make it 5-0. Jacquelyn Cline scored from backdoor, but Morgan Beagle got loose in transition, Braidy Hunt hit a jumper from the right wing, and EmiLee Brown had a free throw to make it 10-2 at the 5:10 mark.

At that point, Worth County was up 4-1 on the boards. But then Lauren Herndon got the hot hand, scoring off a drive and scoring off a Jadon Dobbins steal to make it 10-6. Braidy Hunt scored backdoor, but then Jacquelyn Cline scored off a drive after Karissa Oberhauser kept a possession alive with an offensive board, and Lauren Herndon scored off another drive. Braidy Hunt hit from the left baseline to put Worth County up 14-10, but then Lauren Herndon hit a 3-pointer set up by a Jadon Dobbins drive to cut it to one to start the second quarter.

It was at that point that Jadon Dobbins turned the game around for North Nodaway, jumping passes on consecutive possessions to put North Nodaway in front for good at 17-14. North Nodaway had an inbounds play at halfcourt, Braidy Hunt gambled for a steal and missed, and Cline was able to weave her way through traffic and score to make it 19-14.

Jill Hardy hit a free throw to stop the bleeding, but Saryn Brown hit Jadon Dobbins for three before Braidy Hunt hit a free throw to cut it to 22-16 at the half.

The game threatened to get away from Worth County at the start of the second half when Jacquelyn Cline hit a 3-pointer and Jadon Dobbins scored off a drive to make it 27-16. But like the Mound City game, North Nodaway had to cling by their fingernails to get the win, as all of a sudden, Worth County started controlling the boards again.

First, Jill Hardy hit a 3-pointer on the right wing. Kynah Steele added a free throw and then Braidy Hunt hit a 3-pointer, and all of a sudden, it was 27-23 again. But once again, Worth County gambled on a steal and missed, and Lauren Herndon was all alone for three to make it 30-23. Morgan Beagle hit a free throw to cut it to 30-24 to start the fourth.

Jacquelyn Cline got to the rim and drew Morgan Beagle’s fourth foul and hit both free throws to make it 32-24, but Worth County began swarming and pressing to start the fourth and Braidy Hunt scored from the baseline and added a steal to cut it to 32-28. Worth County missed a free throw and Cline made one out of two to make it 33-28 with 2:39 left.

Worth County cut it to one possession when Morgan Beagle, who dominated the boards in the second half during the Tigers’ comeback bid, got a putback to make it 33-30. Worth County stole the ball back, but missed, and Braidy Hunt traveled trying to get the board and North Nodaway got the ball back. Braidy Hunt got a tip and EmiLee Brown got a steal and Worth County missed two tries to cut it to one before Morgan Beagle picked up her fifth foul.

But then Lauren Herndon missed a 1-1, and Worth County cut it to one when Jill Hardy hit EmiLee Brown on a high-low look to make it 33-32 with 1:15 left. But Worth County was running out of time and had to foul, and Jadon Dobbins hit both free throws to make it 35-32. Jill Hardy drove down the lane and got the points right back with two free throws with 48 seconds left to make it 35-34.

Worth County was pressing, and Braidy Hunt knocked a ball out of bounds with 45 seconds. But North Nodaway broke the press and ran it all the way down to 27 seconds before Jill Hardy got a tip and knocked it all the back into the backcourt. There was a frantic scramble with three gold shirts and three blue shirts going for the loose ball, but Lauren Herndon came up with it while sprawled on the ground and North Nodaway was able to get a timeout with 23 seconds left.

North Nodaway ran the clock down all the way to 11 seconds before Worth County could get Jacquelyn Cline fouled, and she hit both free throws to make it 37-34. Worth County rushed the ball down the floor, and Braidy Hunt was all alone in the right corner for a 3-pointer with 5.7 seconds left, which she banked home. But Worth County coach Tiffany Bliley had called timeout before the shot, which wiped out the tying basket.

It almost didn’t matter. Mustang Coach Sami Jackson switched up from her normal zone by going to a man to man to stop the 3-pointer. Jill Hardy got a good look from the right wing with Jacquelyn Cline draped all over her, but the shot went in and out and Saryn Brown grabbed the most important board of the game to secure the win.
