Jacquelyn Cline Gets 24 Points, Lauren Herndon 14 Boards; Mustang Girls Hang On

North Nodaway's girls got big nights from Jacquelyn Cline scoring and Lauren Herndon on the boards as they built up a 16 point second half lead and then held off a frantic Mound City rally to win 46-40 Tuesday, February 9th. The Mustangs were seemingly hung over from their 50 point loss to Platte Valley and their 17 point loss to Worth County, committing 20 turnovers, but they played through it to get the win. Frequently, getting out of a slump means ugly wins like Tuesday's game.

Pitted against a much taller squad in Mound City, they had to do well on the boards, and Herndon was up to the challenge after a first quarter which saw the Panthers collect 8 offensive boards and force six turnovers. Somehow, North Nodaway was still in the lead 8-6 after one as Jacquelyn Cline had 6 points in the period, getting loose in transition all three times. Jadon Dobbins added the other two and Ellaina Renfro took a charge on defense.

Mound City tied it at 8 to start the second, but then Herndon got herself going on the boards with a putback, Jacquelyn Cline scored off a drive, and Jadon Dobbins scored from the high post as North Nodaway went in front 14-8. #12 hit a shot from the left wing to cut it to 14-10, but then Cline got loose against the press and added one of her patented scoop shots off a drive to make it 18-10.

The Panthers hung around for the rest of the half and the start of the third quarter, cutting it to 24-18 at the break and then getting to within 24-23 to start the third quarter. North Nodaway was on a fast break when they nearly botched it up, but Jadon Dobbins made a hustle play to save a turnover and kicked it out to Jacquelyn Cline for three to spark the Mustangs.

That seemed to wake them out of their funk as Dobbins got loose in transition and Cline scored off a drive. Then, Ellaina Renfro got a steal, got it to Jadon Dobbins, who got to to Cline for another scoop to make it double digits at 33-23. Herndon added a putback to make it 35-23. Mound City hit a free throw to temporarily stop the bleeding, but Saryn Brown got it to Lauren Herndon in transition and then Cline hit a 3-pointer to make it 40-24 with 2:11 left.

But Mound City had a lot of fouls to give, which meant they could afford to be very aggressive on defense, and a guarded baseline shot at the end of the third gave them new life. They started swarming, pressing, and trapping, and they got it back under double digits at 40-31 early in the fourth as the turnovers started to mount up. It didn't help that North Nodaway was hacking and fouling during that stretch, putting the purple shirts on the line and stopping the clock.

Lauren Herndon scored from inside off a pass from Saryn Brown to stop the bleeding, but Mound City still had a lot of fouls to give and they kept swarming the ball and chipping away, getting the deficit down to 43-39 before North Nodaway finally got in the bonus and Ellaina Renfro hit a free throw with 15 seconds left to make it 44-39.

She missed the second, and North Nodaway committed a foul in the backcourt, opening up the barn door for the Panthers with 12 seconds left as they were in the bonus. They made their first free throw but missed the second and Jacquelyn Cline got the defensive board and hit both free throws to seal the win with 9 seconds left. Missed free throws were costly for the Panthers; they missed several in the final quarter when they were trying to come back.

Jacquelyn Cline had 24 points for the Mustangs. Lauren Herndon had 12 to go with her 21 boards. Jadon Dobbins had 6, Saryn Brown 3, and Ellaina Renfro 1.
