One of the major projects of the $500,000 school bond issue got back on track, project manager Chris Salzman of Con Ed told the Worth County School Board Thursday night. Differences between them and the contractor were ironed out and work is set to begin on the east parking lot October 4th and finish on the 14th. Tuckpointing is 90% complete and work on the roof and guttering is complete. The gym is waiting on delivery of the bleachers, which are still on schedule to come August 22nd. After that, the floor will be painted and varnished and then will sit.
The cost to remove the floor was much more than expected, coming to around $25,000. The reason was that the concrete was very uneven when it was poured in, and it had to be leveled out. The school will put in a paved roadway into the gate leading into the gym. The school still had a little bit of contingency money left over from savings elsewhere; the school had put aside $25,000 to start with for the project.
Enrollment was down seven from last year at 313 students. There were 147 in elementary and 166 in high school. There was a really small kindergarten class of 16 students this year. The school did an active shooter drill and Austin Hann, a Nodaway County Sheriff's Deputy, did training. Elementary Principal Chuck Borey reported that around 150 coaches, administrators, and principals met at the all-GRC meeting that took place in Maysville earlier this month. All the athletic directors will get together on August 31st.
The board voted to put out bids for a 20x40 expansion of the Partnership Library along with an option for a 30x40 expansion; however, the latter option would require a lot more roof work and cost a lot more.
The board voted to select Cover Sports for the covering for the new gym floor. Some of the money will come out of the student council's budget, which the council voted to contribute at their initial meeting this year. The school will cover the rest out of its equipment budget.
Elementary Open House was held on August 16th; participation rate was 80% this year. There were also parenting workshops. Staff and coaches received CPR and first aid training by the Worth County and Gentry County EMT's.
