Tigers Lose Early Lead, Fall to Rock Port 60-28

Worth County's Tigers lost an early 12-point lead and fell to Rock Port 60-28 in district action, ending their season at 9-2. Both of their losses were to Rock Port. The Tigers shared the conference title with Rock Port and Stanberry and Coach Chuck Borey got his 150th win in the process. Playing in their final game were Bryce Ross, Aaron Patton, Dallas Greenland, Kevin Stoll, Tyler Schmitz, Dylan Kinsella, and Ethan Schmitz.

Worth County got the opening kickoff and they were faced with fourth and five early at their own 34. But they elected to go for it on fourth and five and caught a break when Bryce Ross threw a pass to Dallas Greenland in the flat. Chandler Farmer of Rock Port tipped the ball, but Dallas caught the carom and took it all the way down to the Rock Port 12. Two plays later, he was in the end zone to make it 6-0. But after Rock Port stalled thanks to an intentional grounding penalty and was forced to punt, Worth County could not take advantage and was forced to punt. The kick was blocked and Mitchell Minter fell on it in the end zone. Jayden McMahon ran in the extra points to put Rock Port up 8-6.

Aaron Patton caught a 10-yard pass to keep the Tigers going on the next drive to the 37 on third and seven and then he made a leaping catch for another first down at the Rock Port 31. Bryce Ross converted another third down on a busted play when he fumbled the snap but picked it up and ran with it for another first down to the Rock Port 15. Bryce rescued a third and 12 with an 11 yard run to the 6 and then Dallas Greenland converted the first down to the Rock Port 3. Wyatt Rush got a good surge from the line and took it to the house to put Worth County back up 14-8 with 11:57 left in the second.

But then Rock Port went away from the power running series that they had used against Worth County the first game and unveiled an option attack that Worth County could not solve for the rest of the night. It paid dividends on the next series as quarterback Chandler Farmer got into the open field and nobody could bring him down as he put Rock Port back in front with a 59-yard run with 11:03 left. Jayden McMahon ran in the extra points to put the Blue Jays back in front 16-14.

Bryce Ross did all he could to put Worth County in position to answer, taking three consecutive carries up to the 40. Then, Dallas Greenland started to the right, Rock Port overpursued, and Dallas found daylight down the left side and ran in a touchdown to put Worth County back in front 20-16. Worth County then gambled with an onsides kick and it was successful as Brevyn Ross recovered for the Tigers. A long run by Dallas Greenland put Worth County within striking distance at the Rock Port 14, but they nearly squandered thanks to a sack that set up third and 14. But then Andrew Mullock slipped and fell, but caught a pass while on his knees with a defender on him for a measured first down at the 4. Dallas Greenland's cutback run to the left side scored and Bryce Ross ran in the extra points to make it 28-16.

But on the next play, with Worth County trying to stop the Rock Port option, the Blue Jays hit Worth County with a counter to Mitchell Minter for a 21-yard gain to the Tiger 29 and then McMahon took the option to the house and ran in the extra points to make it 28-24. Worth County drove to their own 37, but a fumbled snap set up fourth and seven and Bryce Ross' draw was short of the first down right before half.

Rock Port had not used their speed merchant, Eric Duncan much all night as he was a decoy to keep the defense honest, but they unveiled him at the start of the second half as they aired it out to him on third and seven at the 31 and he took it 49 yards for a score to put Rock Port in front for good at 30-28 with 10:36 left. Worth County went three and out on their next series and once again, Rock Port put on a heavy punt rush and nearly blocked it and the short punt put them at the Tiger 38. They were backed up all the way to their own 29 by a holding penalty, but it didn't matter as the option was working that well for them. Farmer took an option to the Tiger 36 and then two plays later, the counter burned Worth County again as Minter took it 37 yards to make it a two possession game following McMahon's extra point run to make it 38-28.

Worth County got one first down, but had to punt again following a false start penalty. This time, Worth County blocked much better and Aaron Patton's punt pinned Rock Port deep in their own territory at the seven. It didn't matter as Rock Port went to their power running game to take time off the clock with the lead and McMahon got five carries out of six on the next series. The backbreaker was a late hit on Worth County that moved the ball to the Tiger 15. That set up a 6 yard run from McMahon with 1:57 left to make it 44-28.

Worth County threatened again as Bryce Ross scrambled for a first down to the 35 and then Aaron Patton's 14 yard catch and run moved it to the 31. Ross scrambled for 16 more yards to the 15, but at the end of the run, he got a helmet to helmet hit from a Rock Port player cleaning up on the tackle and the game was delayed as he had to be carted off the field. That was a momentum-killer for the Tigers as they could not score on the ensuing possession as the snapping woes that hurt Worth County against Stanberry suddenly made their reappearance. Rock Port tacked on two more scores to put it out of reach as Worth County was unable to do anything offensively without Ross; McMahon scored from 46 yards out with 10:22 left and ran in the extra points and then Eric Duncan scored from 41 yards out with 3:34 left.
