Butch Thomas Joins Sheridan City Council

Eldon (Butch) Thomas was appointed to the Sheridan City Council Monday night, replacing Ruby Allee, who resigned.

The city discussed work on the water system and the water plant. The automatic water pump, which had been broken for some time, was finally fixed. There is still plenty of work to be done at the plant, including starter motor switches. Much of the work will be done in the spring since there is no insulation at the plant. Work on cleaning the water tower was complete. The council voted to raise Water Superintendent Dave Parman's salary to $800 per month. The wells have been holding their own for the last few weeks.

The city has not yet heard whether or not their grant application was approved. The Northwest Missouri Regional Council tied Sheridan's application for overhauling their water system and putting in an emergency connection with the Nodaway Rural Water District with two other communities, Barnard and Graham. Water Superintendent Dave Parman explained a city policy on payments. Parman does not take water payments; customer payments should be either given to Clerk Geneveive Walker or left in the drop box at City Hall.

The city received no written bids for their old tractor; however, they received a verbal offer from Don Hart for $800. The council voted to accept the offer.

The council discussed ordinances related to cleaning properties. Ordinance #97 requires all property owners to keep their properties clean or face legal consequences if they do not clean up their properties within a time frame specified by the city should it choose to send letters of violation. Persons convicted in court of maintaining a nuisance can be fined from $1 to $100 and the city can clean the property at the owner's expense and assess expenses against their taxes.

Cats were another issue discussed. Councilwoman Mary Jo Riley reported having caught 4-5 of them with a live trap; however, there have been several others dumped in town. There is no city ordinance regarding cats although there is one relating to dogs.

The council awarded the bid for cleaning city sidewalks to Jim Bullock for $5 per job.
