Obituary -- Theresa Combs 1931-2022

Theresa Ann Eighmy Combs was born on August 20, 1931 to Ed and Mable Eighmy in Grant City, MO. She graduated from Grant City High School and attended William Jewell College in Liberty, MO.

She married Hobert Warren Combs on August 13, 1954 at the Grant City Baptist Church. To the marriage was born Robert Warren Combs, Cheryl Marie Combs Schmidt, and Beth Ann Combs.

Theresa was a stay-at-home-mom who spent her time sewing, quilting, and volunteering for everything her children were involved with. After she and Warren retired, they volunteered for Disaster Relief with the Southern Baptist Convention, traveling the United States to feed and aid those affected by natural disasters.

Theresa spent many Sunday mornings teaching young children about the love of Christ as a Sunday School teacher, and summers as a Vacation Bible School teacher. She was a softball coach, a scorekeeper, and a cheering fan of everything her children did.

Theresa passed away at her home in Grant City on Thursday, April 7. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Warren, and son, Robert Warren. 

Left to cherish her are daughters, Cheryl Marie (Tony), Beth Ann, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside Services and interment will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2022 at the Allendale Cemetery in Allendale, Missouri.

Obituary -- Carol Runyan 1932-2022

Carol Rea Runyan, 89, Bethany, MO passed away Monday, April 4, 2022 at her daughter’s home.

She was born on September 28, 1932, in Harrison County, Missouri the daughter of Robert O. and Alta Shuey (Madison) Foster.

On December 1, 1951, she married Delbert Clair Runyan in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. He preceded her in death on October 25, 2002.

Carol graduated from Martinsville High School in 1950. She was a member of the Martinsville United Methodist Church, Harrison County Community Hospital Auxiliary, E.C. Society and a library volunteer. Most of her lifetime was dedicated to her family and work on the farm. She milked cows, raised chickens, and produced a very large vegetable garden for 50 years. In her later years, she enjoyed her bible study group, cooking and baking for the Crestview residents, sewing and dollmaking.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; infant twin brother, Darryl Lea; sisters, Esta Mae Williams and Lois Jean Parks; in-laws, Robert and Naomi Runyan; five brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law.

Carol is survived by her children, Jeanie Lou (Ed) Barber, New Hampton, MO, Ronald Lee (Sandy) Runyan, Bethany, MO and Karen Lynne (Bruce) Nail, Bethany, MO; sister-in-law, Beverly Runyan, Bethany, MO; grandchildren, Casey Nichols, Martinsville, MO, Corey (Jamie) Nichols, Bethany, MO, Cully (Julie) Nichols, Martinsville, MO, Reggie Runyan, Martinsville, MO, Ronnette Maples, Arizona, Sabrina (Dusty) Ellis, Bethany, MO, Brian Nail, Eagleville, MO, Crissy (Chad) Wooderson, Blue Springs, MO, and Dustin (Nikki) Nail, Gilman City, MO; step-grandchildren, Brooke Shipers-Johnson, Ashley Pittsenbarger, Shelby Shipers-Burrows, and Brady Shipers; 27 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; plus many nieces and nephews; and classmates and dear friends, Lois Blessing, Beverly Butler, Colleen Smith, and Phyllis Daniel.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 8 at Roberson Funeral Home, Bethany, MO. Burial will follow in Kidwell Cemetery, Martinsville, MO. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Courthouse News for April 6th, 2022

On March 24th, the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department reported that Rodney Johnson (74) of Dallas (IA) was attempting to exit the Vetter Equipment parking lot in Mount Ayr in a Melcher-Dallas school bus when he backed into a parked vehicle owned by Tyler Church.

On March 25th, Harrison County Prosecutor Johnathan Meyer filed charges against Daniel Kemboi (41) of West Des Moines (IA) alleging Careless & Imprudent Driving (Accident).

On March 28th, Harrison County Prosecutor Johnathan Meyer filed charges against Christopher Meringa (37) of Bethany alleging DWI and Careless & Imprudent Driving (Accident).

On March 29th, Harrison County Prosecutor Johnathan Meyer filed charges against David Fish alleging Peace Disturbance. Bond was set at $500, with defendant given leave to post 10% cash.

On March 29, 2022, at approximately 11:05 p.m. the Taylor County Communications Center received a 911 call about a house located at 205 Main Street in New Market being on fire. New Market Fire and Rescue was dispatched and were able to extinguish the fire. The home is considered a total loss. Deputies with the Taylor County Sheriff's Office investigated the cause of the fire. As a result, Amanda Carlson, 35, of New Market, was charged with Arson in the 2nd Degree. She is being held at the Taylor County Jail on $10,000 cash only bond pending an initial appearance before a Magistrate. The Taylor County Sheriff's Office was assisted by New Market Fire and Rescue and the Iowa State Fire Marshal's Office. 

On March 29th, Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft’s Securities Division has announced that digital-asset financial services company, BlockFi Lending LLC (BlockFi), has agreed to pay $50 million to members of the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) and an additional $50 million to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to settle claims related to the offer and sale of unregistered securities. BlockFi had over 400,000 investors in the U.S. On March 25, BlockFi entered into a consent order with the Missouri Securities Division.  The unregistered securities offered and sold to Missourians and other investors across the county were in the form of interest-bearing digital asset deposit accounts called BlockFi Interest Accounts (BIAs).  According to Securities Commissioner David Minnick, more than 5,300 Missourians held BIAs at BlockFi. The $50 million settlement with the NASAA members will be shared equally, with $943,396.22 paid to the Missouri Investor Education and Protection fund over the next two years.

On March 30th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that a 2019 Chevy Malibu driven by Jason Crawford (39) of Bethany was northbound on Route 69 just north of Bethany at around 12:20 am when he failed to negotiate a curve, traveled off the west side of the roadway, and struck a tree. Crawford was killed in the wreck.

On March 30th, additional charges were filed against Braymer teacher and coach Zachary Douglas. Caldwell County Prosecutor Brady Kopek filed charges against Douglas alleging four counts Sexual Abuse, two counts Statutory Sodomy, four counts Sexual Contact with a Student, and two counts Furnishing Pornographic Material to a Minor.

On March 30th, the Trenton Police Department reported that they received a call advising that there was a suspicious item at the Trenton High School. The school was evacuated and students were released to their parents while law enforcement searched the school.

On March 30th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Bailey Brown (30) of Sheridan alleging DWI and No Valid License.

On March 31st, during the South Holt/North Nodaway baseball game, one of the South Holt players broke his ankle while sliding into third. Five different people called 911. The Hopkins and Nodaway County Ambulance crews responded.

On 03-31-22 at 0717 hours, the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department reported that there was a two vehicle accident at the intersection of Garfield and Monroe in Mount Ayr, IA between a red 2003 Ford F-350 belonging to Robert James Bryan and a black/dark grey 2017 Buick Enclave belonging to Shannon and Diana Arends.

On March 31st, Harrison County Prosecutor Johnathan Meyer filed charges against Johnathon Shannon (25) of Bethany alleging Domestic Assault (Felony).

On March 31st, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Michael Poppa (30) of Hopkins alleging DWI, Failure to Drive on Right Half of Roadway, No Insurance, Failure to Register, and No Seat Belt.

On March 31st, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Jacqueline Van Fossan (21) of Clarinda alleging DWI and Failure to Drive on Right Half of Roadway (Accident). 

On April 1st, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Malinda Pangle (63) of Barnard alleging DWI and Failure to Signal.

On April 1st, Special Prosecutor Myra Stout filed charges against Rachel Flowers (36) of Gilman City in Harrison County alleging Non-Support (Felony).

On April 1st, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Kelly Goodin (64) of Maryville alleging DWI (Felony), Driving While Revoked, and Failure to Stop. Bond was set at $5,000, with defendant given leave to post 10% cash.

On April 1st, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Michael Bates (33) of St. Joseph alleging DWI and Speeding (20-25 mph over).

On April 1st, Daviess County Prosecutor Andrea Beth Gibson filed charges against Scott Adams (32) of Hamilton alleging Attempted Arson (Felony), Domestic Assault (Felony), Armed Criminal Action (Felony), two counts Endangering the Welfare of a Child (Felony), and Unlawful Possession of an Illegal Weapon. Bond was denied. Northwest Mo Info reports that the charges arose after the defendant allegedly used fuel and a cigarette lighter and attempted to set his family’s home on fire. 

On April 4th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Dalton Area (22) of St. Joseph in Nodaway County on a charge of Resisting Arrest, a Board of Parole & Probation Warrant (Parole Violation), and a Buchanan County Warrant for Failure to Appear (Possession of Controlled Substance).

Charges listed are mere allegations. Evidence in support of the charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty it is to determine guilt or innocence. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Sheridan Express Invites Letters Regarding Potential Worth County Baseball Cooperative with NEN

The Sheridan Express is inviting letters to the editor regarding whether or not the Worth County School Board should enter into a baseball cooperative agreement with Northeast Nodaway. There are strong opinions in the county on both sides. We have had plenty of people come up to us in recent years asking why Worth County doesn't offer baseball. Worth County is one of four area schools, along with Union Star, Mound City, and Stanberry, which does not offer baseball. Rock Port, a traditional track powerhouse, offered it for the first time this year. On the other hand, in its list of pros and cons on the school website, the school notes that people have donated $100,000 over the years towards the current track. The fear is that a baseball program or cooperative agreement will kill the track and golf programs.

The next Worth County school board meeting is April 21st, so all letters must be received on or before April 19th; the last issue before the board meeting is April 20th. Obituary -- Richard Force 1941-2022

Richard Force, age 81, Skidmore, Missouri, formerly of Parnell, Missouri, died Monday, April 4, 2022, at the Maryville Living Center, Maryville, Missouri.

Albert Richard Force was born January 28, 1941, in Benton, Iowa.  He was the son of the late Albert and Vera May (Downing) Force.

Richard attended Grant City R-I school, Grant City.  

Richard was united in marriage to Marilyn Kay Frampton.  To this union two daughters were born Patty and Connie.

Richard had worked as a farm hand for many farmers in the area.  He also worked at Livestock Sale Barns in Red Oak, Lamoni, Bedford and Mt. Ayr, Iowa as well as St. Joseph, Maryville and Grant City, Missouri.  

Richard was good friends with Larry Mahan, former, Pro Rodeo 6 time World All-Around Champion and 2 time bull riding World Champion.

Richard was a member of the Assembly of God Church, Redding, Iowa.  He also was a member of the Worth County Sheriff’s Posse.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marilyn (October 7, 2008), and brothers Donnie, Ronnie and Charles.

His survivors include: two daughters Patty (Jeff Dishong) Force, Skidmore, Connie (Terry) McMichael, Maryville, one sister Linda Anthony, Grant City, Missouri, one brother Robert Force, Rice, Texas, four grandchildren Jennifer (Steve) Hendrix, Daphne (Max) McMichael, April McMichael, Austin McMichael, four great-grandchildren April Carneo, David Hendrix, Robert, James and Noah Hedglin, David Hendrix and a host of other friends and loved ones.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Friday, April 8, 2022 at the Andrews-Hann Funeral Chapel, Grant City, with cremation afterward. Pastor Len Green officiating.  The family will receive friends from 10-11 prior to the service.  Inurnment will be at a later date in the Luteston Cemetery, Sheridan, Missouri.  Memorial:  Luteston Cemetery

Tiger Boys Win Second Meet at King City; Girls Improve to 3rd

Worth County’s boys won again at King City, running away from King City and Stanberry, while the girls improved from seventh at their home meet to third Friday.

The boys won with 154 team points. King City had 109, Stanberry 100½, Platte Valley 68, Braymer 55½, Albany 48, Winston 44, Stewartsville/Osborn 41, Nodaway Valley 30, North Andrew 28, Gilman City 27, DeKalb 7, North Nodaway 2, and Union Star 2.

For the girls, Stanberry and DeKalb each had 96. Worth County had 74, Platte Valley 73, Braymer 53, Gilman City 44, North Andrew 44, Union Star 42, King City 39, Stewartsville/Osborn 38½, Albany 33, North Nodaway 30½, Nodaway Valley 30, and Winston 10.

Becca Smith was fourth in the 100 with a time of 14.53. The Tigers placed two in the 100 Hurdles. Eva Engel was fifth with a time of 21.71, while Brooklyn Richardson was sixth with 21.73. The Tigers also placed two in the 300 hurdles as Bridgette Hightshoe was third with a time of 59.68 and Brooklyn Richardson was fourth with a time of 59.88.

The 4x100 team of Hailey Adwell, Brooklyn Richardson, Becca Smith, and Emma Spencer was third with a time of 56.48. The 4x200 team of Becca Smith, Emma Spencer, Eva Engel, and Bridgette Hightshoe was fourth with a time of 2:01.20. 

Eva Engel won the Pole Vault with a height of 7’0½”. Paige Sherer was third with a height of 6’6¾”. 

The Tigers were 2-3 in the Discus. Ali Brown was second with a throw of 97’7¼”, a personal best, while Kara Staton was 90’10¼”, good enough for third.  Ali Brown was fourth in the Javelin with a throw of 101’0½”. 

On the boys side, Levi Cassavaugh was third in the 100 with a time of 12.33. John Galanakis was fifth in the 200 with a time of 26 seconds. Cannon Fletcher got a personal best in the 800 with a fifth place finish of 2:26.96. Fletcher also got a personal best in the 1600,  knocking four seconds off his time and finishing second with a time of 5:09.72. The Tigers continued their usual dominance in the hurdle events. Jace Cousatte won the 110 Hurdles with a time of 17.74, followed by Aydan Gladstone with a second place finish of 18.45. They also placed 1-2 in the 300 Hurdles with Jace Cousatte getting a time of 44.83 and Aydan Gladstone getting a time of 45.94.

The 4x100 team of Jackson Smith, Carter Chapman, Landon Moser, and Tyler New was sixth with a personal best time of 51.14, seven seconds better than last time. The 4x200 team of Aydan Gladstone, Levi Cassavaugh, Braxton Hightshoe, and Jace Cousatte won with a time of 1:36.72, two seconds better than their previous best. The 4x400 team of Levi Cassavaugh, John Galanakis, Tyler New, and Braxton Hightshoe was third with a time of 3:56.22, close to their personal best. 

The Tigers placed two in the High Jump as Braxton Hightshoe was fourth with a height of 5’9”, and John Galanakis was fifth with a height of 5’7”. The Tigers were 1-2 in the Pole Vault as Aydan Gladstone won with a height of 10 feet and Levi Cassavaugh was second with a height of 9’6”, a personal best. Landon Moser was eighth in the Long Jump with a just of 16’1¼”. Jace Cousatte was second in the Triple Jump with a jump of 37’10¾”. Tyler New was fifth with a personal best of 37’1¼”. 

Jase Latham was second in the Shot Put with a throw of 45’1¼”. Colt Cameron was seventh with a throw of 35’1¼”. Elias Alarcon was second in the Discus with a throw of 145’5¾”. Colt Cameron was third with a throw of 137’9”. Alex Rinehart was second in the Javelin with a throw of 141’8¾”. Tyler New got a personal best, finishing fourth with a throw of 118’11¼”.
