Courthouse News for July 13th, 2022

During the July 4th holiday weekend, the Missouri State Highway Patrol worked 285 traffic crashes and 11 boating accidents. There were 107 people injured and 6 killed. 11 people were injured in boating accidents. There were 141 DWI arrests and 100 drug arrests.

On July 4th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Joshua Paulus (23) of West Des Moines (IA) in Nodaway County on a charge of DWI.

On July 5th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Charles Hamilton (85) of Barnard alleging Careless & Imprudent Driving (Accident).

On July 5th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Chad Davis (37) of St. Joseph alleging Domestic Assault (Felony). Bond was set at $50,000, cash or corporate surety.

On July 5th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Wendy Schuck (35) of Omaha alleging Stealing.

On July 5th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Michael Bland (48) of Council Bluffs alleging Stealing.

On July 5th, the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department reported that Mitchell Lutrick (22) of Mount Ayr was stopped waiting to turn into Vetter Equipment and Rich Elmer (70) of Mount Ayr didn’t see him. Lutrick’s 2017 Chevy truck and 2020 Norstar flatbed trailer both sustained damages. Elmer’s 2020 Ford pickup was towed away. Elmer was checked out by Ringgold County Ambulance. No other injuries were reported at time of accident.

On July 5th at around 5:20 am, the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department reported that Chad Bounds (47) of Delphos was southbound on P32 on his Harley-Davidson Motorcycle when he struck a deer. He was taken to the Ringgold County Hospital for his injuries.

On July 6th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Christina Harris (33) of Kansas City in Harrison County on charges of Driving While Suspended, No Plates, and a Felony Warrant from Jackson County.

On July 7th, the Associated Press reported that Smithfield Foods will pay restaurants and caterers $42 million to settle allegations that Smithfield was allegedly conspiring to inflate pork prices. Previously, they had settled with a different group of pork buyers for $83 million. Lawsuits remain active against other pork producers such as Hormel, Tyson Foods, Seaboard Foods, and Triumph Foods along with a database company they allegedly used to share confidential information about price, capacity, and demand.

On the morning of July 7th, a Ravenwood woman reported that lightning had struck her home at 3 am, setting off fire alarms. Fire departments from Ravenwood and Parnell responded as well as numerous other first responders. It turned out to be a false alarm.

On July 7th, a Ringgold County woman reported that her mother’s walker was stolen from one of the care facilities.

On July 7th, a Bethany woman reported vehicles peeling out on 20th Street, especially late at night and when children were at play.

On July 7th, Daviess County Prosecutor Andrea Beth Gibson filed charges against Kayla Bower (33) of Ludlow alleging Endangering the Welfare of a Child (Felony) and Kidnapping (Felony). Northwest Mo Info reported that the defendant had allegedly threatened to kill a minor child family member with a tire changing tool, believing the child was demonically possessed. The defendant allegedly refused to let the child out of the car. Bond was denied.

On July 8th, a Coffey resident reported that a Kx 65 kids bike was stolen from the old DOT barn south of Coffey the night before.

On July 8th, the Associated Press reported that Sysco, the nation’s largest food distributor, filed a lawsuit accusing Tyson Foods, JBS, Cargill, and National Beef of price fixing. The plaintiffs allege that the defendants conspired to suppress the number of cattle being slaughtered since at least 2015 to help drive up the price of beef. The plaintiffs alleged that the companies’ coordinated efforts drove down the price meat processors paid ranchers while propping up beef prices, boosting the profits for meat producers.

On July 8th, the Life Flight helicopter was seen flying over Maryville at around 5:20 pm headed northwest.

On July 8th, the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department arrested Kevin Stewart (50) of Maloy on a charge of DWI. Bond was set at $1,000, posted by the defendant.

On July 9th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that a 2007 Ford Edge driven by a 16 year old teen from Stanberry was eastbound west of Orion Road east of Conception Junction on 136 at around 11:06 am. The Ford traveled off the right side of the roadway; the driver overcorrected, crossed the center line, skidded, traveled off the right side, struck a culvert, and then a fence. The teen and a passenger, Bailey Wallace (19) of Stanberry, received minor injuries; both were taken to Mosaic in Maryville.

On July 9th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Dylan Huntsman (24) of Grant City in Gentry County on charges of DWI, Failure to Signal, and No Headlights. 

On July 9th, a Bethany resident reported that someone on Main Street destroyed their yard ornaments, messed with their plants, knocked down plant fertilizer, poisoned their daughter's rabbit, and stole some hot dogs and carpet cleaner.

On July 9th, Harrison County Prosecutor Johnathan Meyer filed charges against Barbara Rairden (31) of Bethany alleging Tampering with Motor Vehicle. Bond was set at $5,000, cash only.

On July 9th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Devon Hampton (28) and Ross Weiser (27),  of St. Joseph alleging Stealing (Felony). 

On July 9th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Todd Ites (34) of Maryville alleging Assault. Bond was denied.

On July 10th, two cop cars with sirens on passed through Sheridan during the afternoon headed west on 246.

On July 11th, Special Prosecutor Tara Cluck filed charges against Bryan Harris (41) of Winfield (MO) in Nodaway County alleging Non-Support (Felony).

On July 11th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Waneta Combs (41) of St. Joseph in Gentry County on a charge of No Seat Belt and a City of St. Joseph Misdemeanor Warrant.

On July 12th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Amberlyn Potter (29) of Grant City in Gentry County on charges of DWI, Careless & Imprudent Driving (Accident), Failure to Register, No Insurance, and Driving While Revoked.

Charges listed are mere allegations. Evidence in support of the charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty it is to determine guilt or innocence. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

On Tuesday, Mitchell Bailey, CEO of GRM Networks gave an update on progress of the new Broadband network they are constructing. They have completed building fiber in the rural Princeton exchange, and rural Bethany and rural Spickard are nearing completion. Customers in the Cainsville and Sheridan exchanges have seen construction begin. Crews were along Route 46 east of Sheridan Tuesday morning laying line.

Exchanges in Grand River, Blockton, and rural Princeton are now operational. Fiber cutovers for Spickard have begun and Bethany will soon follow.
