Editorial -- Trudy Busch-Valentine Cuts and Runs from US Senate Debate

The Democratic US Senate ticket has numerous candidates vying to flip the seat Blue this November. Unfortunately, one of them, Trudy Busch-Valentine is not doing much to endear herself to voters ahead of the August primary. As the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported, an upcoming debate between her and primary opponent Lucas Kunce had to be canceled after Busch-Valentine ignored repeated emails inviting her from KMOV debate organizers.

It is unfortunate that certain candidates feel the need to cut and run from having to answer tough questions about their campaigns. All this does is reinforce Republican narratives about Democrats being out of touch elitists who don’t care about the needs of the state.

We need candidates who are not afraid to answer tough questions. What do they plan to do about the gas prices and inflation that is out of control? Are they for Joe Biden’s program of perpetual warfare in Ukraine? What do they plan to do to bring the perpetrators of January 6th to justice?

The last thing we need are candidates who won’t even bother answering emails from news organizations seeking to do their jobs and inform the public. If Busch-Valentine gets elected to the US Senate, why should we trust her to answer the email when a constituent needs help dealing with a government agency?
