Editorial -- Screams of Children at Uvalde Edited Out

It turns out that the screams of the children at Robb Elementary School, where the shooter at Uvalde (TX) killed 21 people, were edited out of videos released to the public regarding the police response to the shooting. This tells me that the authorities only did so in an effort to cover their rears, not bring about any kind of closure to the community or the families.

The first cops arrive at the building at around 11:36 that day. By 12:09 pm, the cops are milling around the hall instead of trying to engage the shooter or trying to help the distressed children, even though they could hear the screams. This tells me that the cops were acting knowingly.

The fact that the authorities edited out the screams of the children tells me that this is another tragedy waiting to happen. The best deterrent of any crime is the likelihood or certainty of getting caught. Criminals like the Uvalde killer have a way of knowing or sensing that they can act with impunity.

The problem is that we have lost sight of right and wrong in this country. It’s not enough to have all the right training. If you’re in charge of hiring cops, you have to pick good people, and pick people who are not afraid to put their lives on the line when it matters. Not cowards who mill around when children are screaming for help and parents outside are begging them to do something.

This is not an indictment of all cops. Abolishing the police, as certain people on the left want us to do, would create more problems than it solves. That would create mob rule and mean that people would take the law into their own hands, which would be far worse. The point is that the actions of these cops, and the people in charge in Uvalde that day, give the whole profession a bad name. And that is not fair to the great majority of law enforcement who do put their lives on the line to protect us, and who enter the profession for the right reasons.
