Freshman hurler Erica Gerken pitched four innings of shutout ball, and she had plenty of help behind her as North Harrison won its first game of the HDC Tournament. She scattered two hits, walked one, hit one, and struck out seven as the Shamrocks scored in every inning and pulled away for the 15-0 win.
Gerken got plenty of run support in the cold and miserable conditions Saturday. Camden Castleberry lined out to left to start the game, but then Carly Rinehart doubled down the left field line and Emma Craig hit another double that sliced away from the center fielder for the first run. The wind was howling in from the north in such a way that everything was slicing away if it was hit to your right.
Rainey Fordyce reached on an error and Kami Gibson singled to left to score Amber Wilson (running for Craig). They went to second and third on a wild pitch, and Baily Briggs grounded out to score Fordyce. Lily Shovick singled down the left field line to score Gibson to make it 4-0 after one.
Gerken’s pitches were moving well in the second as she fooled one batter on a called third strike who backed out of one pitch, and got another to chase her high heat.
Camden Castleberry beat out an infield hit as she hit a slow roller down the third base line, and Carly Rinehart hit a double that once again sliced away from the blue shirts to score Castleberry. Rinehart went to third on the throw home. Rainey Fordyce reached on a dropped fly ball to score Rinehart.
Lily Shovick reached on a dropped third strike to start the third and took second on a throwing error by the catcher. She went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Lola Breshears’ hard hit fly ball to center. Jaci Davis hit it hard, but right at the pitcher for the second out, but Camden Castleberry got her third hit, just past short, to keep the inning going. Carly Rinehart reached on an error and Emma Craig tripled to right center to score both runs to make it 9-0.
Grundy finally started getting good swings off Gerken and led off with a double off the wall in left center despite the wind, but then left fielder Camden Castleberry had her pitcher’s back when she ran down another drive that looked like trouble. Gerken settled down and got the next two out to get out of the inning.
The Shamrocks capitalized on a parade of walks and wild pitches in the fourth inning to close out the game on the 15 run rule. Shovick and Breshears both scored off wild pitches, and Jayliegh Robins crushed one off the right field wall that would have been extra bases had not everybody else not held up to make sure it wasn’t caught.
