Worth County's boys had a slow start and then a slow finish in a 75-50 loss to North Andrew Tuesday night. "We played hard for about three quarters, but our start and our finish were disappointing," said Coach Chris Healy. He said that improvement would come from defensive fundamentals, saying that there were too many times people were out of position, but that it would improve because the team was working hard in practice to correct those mistakes.
Worth County got back Brevyn Ross from a back injury; he started and played at full strength. They got plenty of scoring from both Brevyn and Bryce but not enough scoring from anyone else to compensate offensively. When they did find a third scoring option, that was when they were at their most effecitve on the floor. The first five minutes was a layup drill for North Andrew as they gave up way too many easy baskets on defense; Coach Chris Healy burned a couple of timeouts to try and stop the run. Bryce Ross had six out of Worth County's seven points in the first quarter as the Tigers trailed 19-7.
Brevyn got going and got some steals on defense as did Bryce Ross; Bryce shot the Tigers back under double digits as he had 14 in the second period and Worth County got the lead down to nine. Brevyn Ross had 4 and Grant Parman added a couple of backdoor layups for the Tigers.
Brevyn Ross scored off a pair of steals as Worth County got to within four at one point, but Bryce Ross started tiring and missing shots; he had 20 at the half, but could not sustain that level of scoring for the whole game against a good team. Worth County was doing way too much hacking and fouling on defense, getting into the bonus at the 2:31 mark of the third quarter; after the Cardinals got into the bonus, that was when they started pulling away, scoring the last 12 points of the third period to lead 56-37. The fourth quarter turned into a layup drill for the Cardinals, who led by as much as 28 in the final period.
Bryce Ross led the scoring with 28 points, followed by Brevyn Ross with 11. Grant Parman followed with six, followed by Cole Parman with 3 and Nate Pointer with 2.
The JV lost 28-13 to North Andrew that evening. Josh Warner led the scoring with 4, followed by Will Rennells with 3. Brevyn Ross, Truman Moore, and Lane Craven each had two. Chris Alarcon took a charge on defense.
