Bluejay Girls Set School Record for Fewest Points Allowed

Northeast Nodaway’s girls set a school record Monday night when they held Union Star to four points in a 35-4 running clock win over the Trojans. Coach Vance Proffitt was gone to a funeral and assistant Denise Henggeler managed the team in his absence. “They came out fired up and had something to prove tonight,” she said. Northeast opened with a scoring flurry, scoring 10 in the first few minutes and pulled away for the remainder of the game. It was a rare scoring burst for a team that has struggled to score this year.
Taryn Farnan continued to be a reliable double digit threat for Northeast, leading the scoring with 11 points. She has scored double figures in all but two games for Northeast this year. Dallis Coffelt had 7, Jill Spire 6, Holly Redden 5, Kaysie Wiederholt 4, and Kerrigan Adwell 2.
Northeast switched from their usual man to man to a 2-3 zone which Union Star was not prepared for. “Me and Vance talked about it before the game and he told me I could switch back to man if I wanted to, but the zone was working and we were getting a lot of steals out of it,” said Henggeler.
The boys also won, getting a 39-32 win over the Trojans. “They’re one of the most improved teams in the conference this year,” said Coach Chaim Jenkins. It was a hard-fought physical game and it got so rough that even Referee Tom Seipel was calling fouls that game. “Shaun Burns was very aggressive for us and Kevin, Joel, and Sage were cleaning up the glass for us tonight,” said Jenkins. “Steve Schulte kept us in the game in the first half with his shooting.” Union Star held a small lead through much of the first half, but every time they tried to pull away, Steve would hit a 3-pointer. Steve Schulte and Aaron Patton each had 12 points, followed with Kevin Stoll with 11.
Jenkins said that the difference between the Union Star game and the South Nodaway game was that Northeast started off much more aggressive against Union Star than they did against the Longhorns. “We were a lot more tentative in the South Nodaway game,” he said. He said that the goal for the team was to cut down on their turnovers so that they could put more points on the board.
