At Least 700 Horses Exposed to Equine Herpes in Western US

At least 700 horses have been exposed to equine herpes in the Western US, leading to the cancellations of horse events all over the region. There is no known cure for the disease, known as Equine Herpes Virus-1. Some have already died. The disease spreads no threat to humans, but is highly contagious. Symptoms include high fever, nasal discharge, sneezing, staggering, and partial paralysis. It can also be spread among alpacas and llamas. It can be transmitted through the air, touching, sharing feed, brushes, bits, other equipment, and water buckets.
