Brandy Runde, Emily Bryant get Graduation Honors

Brandy Runde was named valedictorian and Emily Bryant was named salutatorian at the Northeast Nodaway Graduation Saturday. Graduating were Emily Bryant, Taylor Dougan, Bryce Farnan, Deryk Frueh, Chance Hunter, Cole Hunter, Clayton Judd, Chris Porter, Brandy Runde, Blair Schmitz, Cody Schmitz, Kristin Sherry, Caleb Spire, Ashley Standiford, Nick Thurman, Kameron Walker, and Colby Wiederholt. The class flower was the white rose. Class motto was "We all take different paths in life, but no matter where we go, we take a little of each other everywhere." Class colors were blue and silver. Class officers were Brandy Runde (President), Emily Bryant (Vice President), Kristin Sherry (Secretary), and Taylor Dougan (Treasurer).

Emily Bryant plans to attend Northwest Missouri State (NWMSU) to major in merchandising. Scholarships received were the DAR Good Citizen Nominee, the Wendy's Heisman School Winner, the Tower Scholarship, and the John and Ellen Francis Barber Memorial Scholarship. Taylor Dougan plans to attend NWMSU to major in biology/psychology and then complete the sonography program at Hillyard Technical School in St. Joseph. Bryce Farnan plans to enter the workforce in the construction field. Deryk Frueh plans to attend the Northwest Technical School to complete his second year of vo-tech classes to obtain a position in a local shop. Chance hunter plans to attend the Northwest Technical School to complete his second year of vo-tech classes to obtain a position in an auto mechanics shop. Cole Hunter plans to enter the workforce.

Clayton Judd plans to attend the Northwest Technical School to complete his second year of Building Trades Program. He opens to obtain an open union carpentry job. He has received a NuCor Corporation Scholarship. Chris Porter plans to attend NWMSU or Devry College for computer programming or business management. Brandy Runde plans to attend Northwest Missouri State to major in Ag Business. She has received the Farmers Mutual Scholarship, the MFA Scholarship, the Tower Scholarship from NWMSU, the Missouri Achievement Scholarship from NWMSU, the Northeast Nodaway CTA Scholarship, and the Ravenwood CBC Scholarship.

Blair Schmitz plans to attend Northwest Technical School to obtain a degree in nursing. She has received the Teresa Schmitz Scholarship, the National Wild Turkey Federation Scholarship, the Northeast Nodaway CTA Scholarship, and the Senior Scholarship. Cody Schmitz plans to enter the workforce in farming. Kristin Sherry plans to attend NWMSU and major in dietetics. She has received the Distinguished Scholarship from NWMSU, the Distinguished Scholar Attendant Scholarship from NWMSU, and the Missouri Achievement Scholarship from NWMSU. Caleb Spire plans to attend Northwest Technical School to obtain a degree as an EMT and to obtain a position as a paramedic.

Ashley Standiford plans to attend NWMSU and major in radiology. Scholarships include the Tower Scholarship from NWMSU, the Alumni Scholarship from NWMSU, the MO-KAN-NE Scholarship, and the Student Leadership Scholarship. Nick Thurman plans to enter the workforce. Kameron Walker plans to attend the Northwest Technical School to complete his second year of the Building Trades Program. Colby Wiederholt plans to attend a two year program in lawn care and landscaping.

Rhonda Beattie was the pianist and played "Pomp & Circumstance" along with all the other music at graduation. Kourtney Sybert sang the Star Spangled Banner and Superintendent Dr. Jeff Mehlenbacher gave a brief welcome speech. A video was presented with pictures of all the seniors. The Northeast Nodaway Concert Choir played "On Bluejay's Wings." Secondary Principal Jeremy Covey presented honors to the students.

Teacher Colleen Mullock was selected by the class to speak to the graduates. She said that they had grown into caring young adults and and they had learned how to learn. She encouraged them to never stop learning, to think back on the new things that they had learned every day, to persevere in the face of failure. She encouraged them to be happy, since most people are as happy as they plan to be. She said that when they found true love, to embrace it and that the more that they gave away, the more that they would receive. Mullock said that they had built 13 years of relationships and encouraged them to always seek out new ones. She told them to always show gratitude to friends and family and to thank a veteran. "Never think that you did stuff all by yourself, because you always had help along the way," she said.

Mullock told the graduates to "Stay yourself, you're unique." She said that they had many talents and gifts and encouraged them to use their talents to make the right choices.

Salutatorian Emily Bryant said that this would be one of the last few times they would all spend together and encouraged the rest of her classmates to be happy and do what they wanted to do. "Never take anyone or anything for granted," she said. "Never give up and never be afraid to ask for help. I could not have asked for a better group to grow up with."

Valedictorian Brandy Runde told stories about all her classmates. Among the stories told, Cameron Walker was a guinea pig for everything. Emily Bryant was the artist of the group; Cody Hunter and Caleb Spire always had random outbursts; Clayton Judd never lived down being left behind once. Cole Hunter was one of those people who had true grit; Blair Schmitz was one of those people who always made people laugh; Kristin Sherry and Ashley Standiford always got along with everyone; Chris Porter was a mad computer scientist; Nick Thurman had musical talent; Taylor Dougan was a stickler for cleanliness even in elementary.

Connie Teaney recognized the students who won awards and scholarships. Graduating with honors were Bryce Farnan, Cole Hunter, Blair Schmitz, Caleb Spire, and Colby Wiederholt. Graduating with highest honors were Emily Bryant, Taylor Dougan, Brandy Runde, Kristin Sherry, Ashley Standiford, and Kameron Walker. 11 out of the 17 students either graduated with honors or highest honors. There were $21,825 worth of awards and scholarships awarded to the Northeast Class of 2011. The seniors handed flowers out to their parents. Principal Jeremy Covey presented the class and Board President Kenny Runde handed out the diplomas.
