Tigers Drop Schuyler County in Breather; Albany Showdown Next

Worth County dropped Schuyler County Friday in a 60-0 breather as they get ready for their GRC showdown with Albany Friday. It wasn’t clear which Rams team would show up, the team that dismantled Keytesville 70-22, or the one that fell 68-8 the next week against Pattonsburg. It turned out to be the latter, as Worth County stopped them on defense and continued their momentum from the second half of their Doniphan West win. The Rams had 19 players listed in the program, but they were shorthanded, only dressing out 16 for Friday’s game.

Worth County continued to battle injuries as Andrew Alarcon (ankle) went down after they had built up a lead. It took Levi Cassavaugh a couple of series to get into the flow of the game, but once he did, Worth County picked up where they left off and put away the Rams by halftime. The Rams elected to play the second half, and the second stringers added score.

Dylan McIntyre ran back the opening kickoff to the Rams 28, and then Andrew Alarcon got a block from Auston Pride and moved a pile to the 16 for a first down. He then fumbled on his next play, but got a block from Austin Welch and recovered to take it to the four. Two plays later, he got into the end zone and took an option in to make it 8-0 with 9:48 left in the first quarter.

Schuyler County went three and out on their first series, as Justin Dye and Nate Adwell combined on a hit on quarterback Gavin Veatch, Dye blew up a fullback dive from Bronson Shaw, and Dawson Vore blew up a short pass to Shaw. It looked like the Rams would get a break, as a muffed punt gave them the ball back on the Tiger 25, but Vore got a sack, Chase Atkins had perfect pursuit on Kale Windy and dropped him for a loss, and then Vore and Welch combined to hurry Veatch into an incompletion. The ensuing kick was shanked, and Worth County got the ball back on its own 31. They only needed one play to take advantage as Braxton Hightshoe’s play action pass to Dylan McIntyre went for 49 yards and a score with 6:38 left. Andrew Alarcon got in on his final effort to make it 16-0.

Veatch picked up four yards, but then Jackson Runde dropped Windy for a loss, and Austin Welch dropped Veatch for a loss of four back to the 25. Dye rushed the punter, the kick was shanked again, and Worth County got the short field again at the Rams 31. The Tigers shot themselves in the foot with a holding penalty and were faced with fourth and five at the 26, but Andrew Alarcon caught a pass at the 7 despite being closely guarded, setting up first and goal. On the next play, Schuyler County set up a blitz, guessed right, but overran Andrew Alarcon, allowing him to walk in with 2:05 left in the first to make it 22-0.

Nate Adwell blew up a screen pass, and once again, Schuyler County shanked the punt, putting the Tigers on the 36. But this time, Schuyler County stopped Worth County, as Andrew Alarcon was hurt on the series when one of the maroon shirts made a shoestring tackle to stop him.

But Schuyler County fumbled the ball right back to Worth County as Chase Atkins got the hit and Jackson Runde recovered at the Rams 23. This time, Nate Adwell got four yards and a pair of keepers from Braxton Hightshoe got the Tigers a first down at the 6. Levi Cassavaugh picked up two to the four, and a play action pass from Hightshoe to Runde fooled everyone as the Tigers were on the board again. Braxton Hightshoe’s keeper fooled everyone, and Austin Welch knocked down his defender to pave the way for the extra points to make it 30-0 with 9:19 left in the second quarter.

Both teams exchanged stops on defense, as Worth County threw an interception, but Schuyler County was stopped twice on downs. Finally, Levi Cassavaugh started finding his stride as a runningback as he bounced one outside for 11 yards to the Rams 28 for a first down after the Tigers started on the 40. Cassavaugh weaved his way for 13 more after getting a block from Nate Adwell, picked up 14 more to the 1, and followed the blocking of Adwell into the end zone with 3:40 left to make it 36-0. On the next series, Worth County got a pick six as Dawson Vore blitzed and hurried Veatch into an interception, which Runde returned for a score with 3:32 left. Braxton Hightshoe’s counter fooled everyone and he got in to make it 44-0. Runde nearly picked off two more as the Rams threw some desperation passes to try to get back in the game.

Schuyler tried to go for it on fourth and long for some reason deep in their own territory, and that set up Worth County’s next score after Austin Welch hit Veatch as he was throwing on fourth and 12, and the Tigers got the ball back on the Rams 23. Levi Cassavaugh carried the team on his back and the Tigers overcame a holding penalty to score again with 12.6 seconds left. Dylan McIntyre caught a pass to make it 52-0 at the half.

The second string offense added a score in the third quarter when Tyler New threw a strike to Chance Jacobs and Grant McIntyre ran in the extra points to make it 60-0. Chance Jacobs added a sensational catch later in the game, and Colt Cameron ripped off a 10 yard gain for the Tigers.
