Daisy Coleman Dead at 23

Daisy Coleman, who was allegedly raped in Maryville in 2012 in a case that got national attention, took her own life at 23 last Tuesday night, her mother and multiple news outlets reported Wednesday. Her mother contacted police to do a well-being check, and they found her.

Coleman subsequently moved from the area and co-founded safebae.org, a website to support victims of sexual assaults. She was involved in the Netflix documentary Audrie and Daisy that was produced in 2016, which focused on her trauma and the hostile reaction of the community.

Following the 2012 incident, Robert Rice, who was the Nodaway County Prosecutor at the time, declined to prosecute the case, citing what he said was a lack of sufficient evidence, triggering a community and nationwide uproar. Rice subsequently disqualified himself, and a special prosecutor filed charges against her attacker, who pleaded guilty to Child Endangerment. A protest that summer drew hundreds of people to the northeast corner of the Maryville Square, in front of the Courthouse Annex, Maryville Lumber, and Edward Jones.
